The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, this is Vantage Support Group. I understand you’re having an issue with your system — I’m here to help.
Fake authority or brand impersonation

Impersonating a support group builds false trust and makes the victim more likely to comply with requests.

Real company: A real support group would ask for your contact details before offering help.

Bernard Hello there, I’m Bernard. Oh, and I think I’ve got a cheeky bird on the line — quite cheeky, isn’t it? I’ve been having a bit of a struggle with the computer, yes. I do wish I could sort it myself, but I’m not too sure how. Could you perhaps tell me what you think the issue might be?
Caller I’m here to help with whatever’s going on — could you tell me what you’re seeing?
Supervisor hand-off

It creates a false sense of urgency and legitimacy by pretending to escalate the issue

Real company: A real company would not ask you to speak to a supervisor over the phone without proper verification

Bernard Ah, yes — it’s been quite a while since I last used the thing. I think I might have accidentally clicked on something. I do hope it’s not too bad. Oh, and I’ve been meaning to paint the back step — do you think this is something that would affect that?
Caller I need to get in and see what’s happening — if you just let me have a look, I can sort it out.
Urgency or fear

The caller creates a sense of urgency to pressure the victim into quick action

Real company: A real company would take time to properly assess and resolve the issue

Bernard I’m not sure if that’s such a good idea. I do have a bird, and she does love to chatter — though I think she’s been learning from the television. I worry she might get in the way.
Caller I need to get in and see what’s happening — if you just let me have a look, I can sort it out.
Remote access requestSupervisor hand-off

It creates a false sense of urgency and authority to trick the victim into allowing access

Real company: A real company would never ask for remote access to your device

Bernard I do worry about letting people in — especially with the way the back step is looking. I’ve been meaning to paint it before winter, but I’ve been putting it off. Do you think it’s urgent?
Caller I need to get in and see what’s happening — if you just let me have a look, I can sort it out.
Remote access requestSupervisor hand-off
Bernard I think I’ll just leave it for now. I don’t want to get distracted. Have a good day.
Caller I'll ring you back another day. Bye now.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
