The Cold-Call "Virus"

phone call · TechGuard Solutions · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello? Good afternoon, I'm calling from TechGuard Solutions. We've been receiving some unusual activity from your computer, and I'd like to help resolve it before it gets worse.
Unsolicited contact

The caller creates a false sense of urgency to prompt immediate action.

Real company: A real company would not call out of the blue to claim unusual activity on your computer.

Bernard Hello? Oh — well — now, that's a nice name. TechGuard, you say? I rather like it. I was just hearing the end of a radio play. Do you have a moment? I'm just getting my reading glasses.
Caller I'm afraid we need to act quickly. This is a security matter, and we've detected potential threats to your system. If you just let me have a look at it, we can sort it out right away.
Fake authority or brand impersonationUrgency or fear

Creating a false sense of urgency and pretending to be an authority figure pressures the victim into acting without thinking.

Real company: A real company would never call out of the blue and would not pressure you into immediate action.

Bernard Oh dear, that does sound urgent. Do you think the radio would mind if I adjusted the volume? I'm just a bit slow with my hands. Would you mind waiting a moment?
Caller I'm sorry, but this is critical. If we don't fix it now, there could be serious consequences. Just let me have a look at it — it'll only take a moment.
Urgency or fear
Bernard Oh, I do hope it's not too serious. I was just opening a letter from the council — it's about the garden. Do you think it's all right if I go and check that? I'll be right back.
Caller I understand, but this is very important. If you just let me have a look at it now, we can prevent any further issues. Please, don't leave me on hold.
Fake scan or planted problems

The caller creates a false sense of urgency to pressure the victim into immediate action

Real company: A real company would not pressure you to act immediately and would not claim to need remote access to your device

Bernard Oh, I do wish you'd be patient. I was just wondering — do you think it's all right for a parrot? I'll be with you in a moment.
Caller I can't wait any longer. This is a security breach, and we need to resolve it immediately. Just let me have a look at it — there's no time to waste.
Urgency or fearFake scan or planted problems
Bernard Oh, I do apologise. I was just trying to see if the kettle was on — I'm ever so forgetful. Do you think it's too late for tea? I'll be with you in a second.
Caller Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the pattern is

Nobody can see warnings coming from a home computer. The caller has no monitoring centre, no record of the household and no way to know what is on the machine. The "evidence" is whatever the householder is persuaded to look at (an event log full of ordinary notices, a setting that has always been that way), and it is read out as if it were damage. The whole call exists to reach one moment: the householder opening a remote-control tool and handing over the keyboard.

What to do instead

A real security company does not ring out of the blue about your computer, and a real support desk will not ask for remote access to a machine it does not manage. Hang up. If you are worried about the computer, contact the maker or your own IT person using a number you looked up yourself, and run the security tool that is already installed.
