The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, you're through to SafeNet Billing. I see the warning on your screen — it says you have a virus and you must call us immediately. Can I help you with that?
Fake pop-up with phone numberUrgency or fear

The fake pop-up creates panic and makes the victim believe they need immediate help

Real company: A real company would not use fake pop-ups to demand immediate action

Bernard Hello, I'm Bernard. Oh — I've got a coal fire, and I'm just thinking I need to get the shovel. What was the name again? SafeNet? Oh, I thought it was Safenest. Yes, that sounds more like it. I'll just check the fire, then I'll be right with you.
Caller Mr Bernard, it's SafeNet Billing. The warning on your screen is urgent — if you don't act now, your data could be lost. Can I help you resolve this?

Creating a false sense of urgency and using a fake pop-up makes the victim act quickly without thinking.

Real company: A real company would not use fake pop-ups or create false urgency to get you to act immediately.

Bernard Oh — I'm sorry, I was just thinking about the fire again. SafeNet? I think I heard it as Safenest before. I'll just get the shovel and then I'll be back. I don't want to keep you waiting.
Caller Mr Bernard, this is SafeNet Billing. The warning on your screen is very clear — you need to act now to prevent serious issues. Can I help you with that?

Impersonating a trusted brand creates false urgency to trick the victim into complying

Caller I'll try again when the line's behaving. Good afternoon.

What the pattern is

The warning is a web page, not a diagnosis. Anything can draw a red box and a siren, and the number in it belongs to whoever made the page. The alarm is designed to be frightening enough that the householder rings before thinking, and the person who answers has one job: get remote access, then charge for a "clean-up" that does nothing.

What to do instead

A browser warning is a web page and can always be closed. Do not ring the number on it. Close the tab or the window, and if the browser will not close, restart the computer. If a browser keeps doing it, clear the site data or ask someone you trust to look, using software you installed yourself.
