The Over-Refund

No real company will ask you to send money back for an overpayment you didn't receive.

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, I hope I haven't caught you at a bad time. We've noticed a small overpayment in your recent account, and we'd like to ensure everything is balanced before the team notices.
Fake invoice or refund

It creates a false sense of urgency to get the victim to act quickly without thinking

Real company: Contact customers through official channels and never claim overpayments without proof

Bernard Hello, I'm never at a bad time — unless it's Tuesday, but I don't mind that. I've been meaning to phone the gardener about that fence again. My neighbour's cat keeps getting over, and it's been eating the marigolds. Have you ever had a cat? They're quite the troublemakers.
Caller I'm sorry about the fence and the cat — that does sound troublesome. But we need to sort this payment issue quickly before it's flagged. You'll want to avoid any delays, won't you?
Urgency or fear

Creating a sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting quickly without thinking

Real company: A real company would take time to resolve issues and not pressure you into quick decisions

Bernard I do like to avoid delays — especially on a Tuesday. I was just thinking about the garden again. How do you keep a cat from getting over?
Caller I understand your concern, but this is urgent. Acting now will save you from any issues later. It's best to sort this quickly.
Urgency or fear
Bernard I do like to act quickly — though I'm a bit slow on the uptake. I was just about to make a cup of tea. Would you like some?
Caller I'm afraid I can't accept tea, but I do need you to send the difference back before the accounts team notices. It's the quickest way to keep things tidy.
Unusual payment method

It pressures the victim to use a method that bypasses normal verification steps

Real company: A real company would use standard payment methods and not ask for urgent returns

Bernard I do like to keep things tidy — though I'm not very good at it. I was just looking at the garden again. That cat's been causing quite a mess.
Caller I know the cat can be a nuisance, but we need to focus on this payment. If you just let me check the details, we can sort it right away. It's in your best interest.
Unusual payment method
Bernard I do like to check details — though I'm not sure what they are. I was just thinking about the garden again. That cat's getting better at sneaking in.
Caller Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the pattern is

There was no refund, so there is no overpayment to return. The story is engineered so the householder feels they are being honest by helping, and the money is then asked for in a form that cannot be reversed: gift cards, a transfer to a stranger, a payment app, sometimes cash through a courier. Asking for an unusual payment method is the clearest signal in the whole script: real bills come on paper or through an app you already use.

What to do instead

No company can take money back out of your account by asking politely for it, and no real firm asks to be repaid in gift cards. Check your own bank balance and statement first. If money really did arrive that should not have, tell your bank and let them reverse it. Never send money on to an address or account given to you over the phone.
