The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, Mr. Thompson? This is Brightwick Home Services. We've noticed a small discrepancy in your account — it seems you've been refunded an extra £150 by mistake.
Fake invoice or refund

Creating a false sense of urgency to get the victim to act quickly without thinking

Real company: Contact the customer through official channels and resolve the issue without asking for personal information

Bernard Hello? Oh, dear — I don't think I'm Mr. Thompson. I'm Bernard Pottle. Are you sure? I live in a little cottage. I made a jar of marmalade last week, and it's still sitting on the kitchen table.
Caller I'm sorry, Mr. Pottle. We may have mixed up the details. Can I just confirm your address? It's important we get this sorted before the accounts team notices.
Urgency or fear

Creating a sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting quickly without thinking

Real company: A real company would take time to verify details without creating pressure

Bernard Oh — well — now, I'm not sure I've got an address. I live in a bungalow by the river. There's a bird in the garden. She's very proud of something.
Caller I'm sorry, Mr. Pottle. We may have mixed up the details. Can I just confirm your address? It's important we get this sorted before the accounts team notices.
Greed or reward bait

The caller creates confusion to delay and manipulate the victim into sharing personal details.

Real company: A real company would clearly explain the situation without creating unnecessary confusion.

Bernard Oh — well — now, I'm not sure I've got an address. I live in a bungalow. There's a bird. She's very proud of something.
Caller I'm sorry, Mr. Pottle. We might have the wrong details. Can you tell me where you live? The team needs to check it quickly.
Unusual payment method

the caller tries to get personal info to make a fake refund seem real

Real company: ask for your account number through official channels

Bernard I live in a small house. There's a jar on the table. It's homemade. I'm quite proud of it.
Caller No, that's, hang on, I had it a moment ago. It doesn't matter. It really doesn't matter.
Unusual payment method
Bernard Oh — well — now, I think I've got a marmalade jar. It's by the table.
Caller Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the pattern is

There was no refund, so there is no overpayment to return. The story is engineered so the householder feels they are being honest by helping, and the money is then asked for in a form that cannot be reversed: gift cards, a transfer to a stranger, a payment app, sometimes cash through a courier. Asking for an unusual payment method is the clearest signal in the whole script: real bills come on paper or through an app you already use.

What to do instead

No company can take money back out of your account by asking politely for it, and no real firm asks to be repaid in gift cards. Check your own bank balance and statement first. If money really did arrive that should not have, tell your bank and let them reverse it. Never send money on to an address or account given to you over the phone.
