The Pop-Up with a Phone Number

pop-up · SafeNet Billing · invented, like everything else here.

The Pop-Up with a Phone Number

No real company will pretend your screen is infected to get you to call them.

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, this is SafeNet Billing. You have a security alert on your screen — you need to call now to fix it before it's too late.
Fake pop-up with phone numberUrgency or fear

Creating a false sense of urgency to pressure the victim into acting quickly

Real company: Send a secure message through official channels without demanding immediate action

Bernard Hello there — I'm just having a cup of tea. Oh, I did see something on the screen, but I thought it was the weather forecast. Do you know, I've never been good with technology. Could you tell me again?
Caller I’m sorry, but the warning on your screen is urgent — it shows your system is infected. If you don’t act now, it could spread and cause serious damage.

Bernard Oh, I see — I thought it said 'weather forecast'. I'm a bit confused, to be honest. Do you think it would be all right if I rang back later? I should probably check with the cat first.
Caller This is a security alert — your system is infected. You need to act now to prevent damage.
Fake authority or brand impersonationUrgency or fear

Creating a false sense of emergency makes the victim act without thinking

Real company: A real company would provide clear steps and not demand immediate action

Bernard Oh, I thought it said something else. I'm a bit confused. Do you think I should wait a moment? I need to check with the cat.
Caller Your system is infected. You need to act quickly to stop it from spreading.
Urgency or fearRemote access request

Creating panic makes the victim less likely to think clearly or verify the claim.

Real company: A real company would provide clear steps and let you contact them at your convenience.

Bernard Oh — I didn't realise it was so urgent. I'm just having a cup of tea. Do you think it would be all right if I came back to this in a moment? I need to check with the garden.
Caller Your system is infected. If you don't act now, it could spread.
Fake scan or planted problems

creates a false sense of urgency to trick the victim into acting quickly

Real company: notify the user through official channels and provide clear steps to resolve the issue

Bernard Oh — I see. I thought it said something else. I'm just getting the kettle. Do you think it would be all right if I came back to this later?
Caller Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the pattern is

The warning is a web page, not a diagnosis. Anything can draw a red box and a siren, and the number in it belongs to whoever made the page. The alarm is designed to be frightening enough that the householder rings before thinking, and the person who answers has one job: get remote access, then charge for a "clean-up" that does nothing.

What to do instead

A browser warning is a web page and can always be closed. Do not ring the number on it. Close the tab or the window, and if the browser will not close, restart the computer. If a browser keeps doing it, clear the site data or ask someone you trust to look, using software you installed yourself.
