The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, this is Vantage Support Group. I understand you're having some issues with your account — I'm here to help.
Fake authority or brand impersonation

Using a fake company name creates a false sense of legitimacy.

Real company: A real company would use its official name and not make unsolicited claims about account issues.

Bernard Hello, I'm Bernard Pottle. Oh — I do hope you're not suggesting I need help with anything — I've been quite happy on my own, thank you. Have you heard the latest on the radio? There was a lovely play on earlier.
Caller I'm sorry, Mr. Pottle — I need to clarify something. This is a follow-up from your initial call. I'm here to assist with the issue we were discussing.
Supervisor hand-off

It creates a false sense of legitimacy and urgency by claiming to be a follow-up from a previous call.

Real company: A real company would not suddenly introduce a new representative without prior notice or context.

Bernard Oh — I see. I did have a call earlier, didn't I? I thought it was someone else. But I'm not sure what we were talking about. I had a letter — I meant to open it, but it's been sitting on the table. Do you know, I've just remembered — there's a programme on the radio about a man who keeps a parrot.
Caller Mr. Pottle, we need to act quickly. If we don’t resolve this now, you may lose access to your services — and that could cause some serious inconvenience.
Urgency or fear

Creating a sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting without thinking

Real company: A real company would explain issues calmly and provide clear steps to resolve them

Bernard Oh — serious inconvenience, you say? I wasn't expecting to do anything. I was just thinking about the garden — the neighbour's cat has been getting into things again. I'll try to remember what the letter said later.
Caller Mr. Pottle, I need just a moment to check your system — if you'd let me have a look, it'll only take a second.
Remote access request

It creates a false sense of urgency and trust by pretending to help

Real company: A real company would never ask for remote access without prior arrangement

Bernard Oh — a look, you say? I'm not sure what to do with that. I was just about to make a cup of tea. Do you know, I had a letter from the council — I meant to read it, but I keep forgetting. I wonder what it said.
Caller Mr. Pottle, I need to check your account — quickly, before it's too late.

Bernard Oh — I was just thinking about the garden again. The neighbour's cat has been getting into things. I wonder if it's been in the mail.
Caller Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
