The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, I'm calling about your recent invoice from CloudHarbour Subscriptions. We can sort it out straight away if you'd just let me look at your account.
Fake invoice or refund

It creates a false sense of urgency to get the victim to act quickly without thinking.

Real company: A real company would not pressure you to act immediately and would provide clear steps to resolve the issue.

Bernard Hello, I'm Bernard. I don't recall any invoice, but I do have a coal fire that needs shovelling. Have you ever seen such a stubborn flame? It's like it's determined to burn all night.
Caller I'm sorry about the fire, but I can offer a £200 credit if we sort this now. It's a small gesture for the trouble.
Greed or reward bait

offering a reward creates a false sense of urgency and entices the victim to act quickly

Real company: a legitimate company would not offer unexpected rewards to encourage quick action

Bernard £200? That's more than my monthly pension. I must have missed the letter — I was out. Do you think it would be all right if I check the post again? I'll be five minutes.
Caller I understand, but the credit is only valid for the next ten minutes. We need to act quickly.
Urgency or fear

Creating a false sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting without thinking.

Real company: A legitimate company would not pressure you to act quickly or keep information secret.

Bernard Ten minutes? That's not long at all. I'll be quick — just need to find the postbox. It's under the cherry tree. Sometimes I forget where I put things.
Caller I'm sorry, but the offer is only open for ten minutes. If you'd just let me look at your account, we can confirm it right away.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear

Creating a false sense of urgency to pressure the victim into acting quickly

Real company: Ask for the information through secure, official channels without pressuring the customer

Bernard Let me see... I don't know the password, but I do know the logs are getting low. I'll just pop to the shed for more. It's not far — just past the greenhouse.
Caller I'm afraid the offer is almost gone. If you'd just let me check the account, we can sort this quickly.

Bernard I'll be there in a moment — just need to get the coal. It's been a bit damp today.
Caller Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the pattern is

The invoice is bait, and there is no subscription and no charge. The point of the bill is to start a conversation in which the householder is alarmed, then relieved: money is coming back, if only they help. The "refund" needs a bank login or remote access, which is the real target. A genuine refund never requires either, and a real company never asks a customer to keep a refund quiet.

What to do instead

Check the account the bill claims to be from, by typing the address of the service you actually use, or ring the number on a statement you already have. If you never bought the thing, there is nothing to reverse. Never give a bank login or remote access to someone who rang you, and treat any request for secrecy as the end of the conversation.
