The Surprise Invoice and Refund

No real company will ask you to repeat a company name over and over.

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, Mr. Thompson? This is CloudHarbour Subscriptions. We’ve noticed an unexpected charge on your account, and we’d like to issue you a full refund.
Fake invoice or refund

Creating a false sense of urgency to trick the victim into acting quickly without thinking

Real company: Contact the customer through official channels and provide clear steps to resolve the issue

Bernard Hello? Oh, dear — I’m Bernard Pottle. I don’t think I’ve ever been called Mr. Thompson. Do you have a moment? I was just about to have a snack.
Caller My apologies, Mr. Pottle. I'll be quick — we need to look into this refund, and there's a small bonus for early resolution. Just a moment, and we can sort this out.
Greed or reward bait

Offering a bonus creates a false sense of urgency and entices the victim to act quickly without thinking.

Real company: A real company would not offer unexpected bonuses to resolve issues.

Bernard A bonus? That sounds lovely. I do love a good snack — but I’m not sure I’ve got the right tin. Would you mind repeating the name of the company again?
Caller CloudHarbour Subscriptions, Mr. Pottle. This is the department that handles refunds and account issues. We’re just trying to make sure there’s no confusion.
Told to keep it secret

creating a sense of urgency and exclusivity to prevent the victim from seeking help

Real company: explain the process openly and invite the customer to ask questions

Bernard CloudHarbour? Oh — I’ve heard of a company called Cloudfloor. Is that the same? I’m a bit deaf in this ear — you’ll have to speak up, won’t you?
Caller CloudHarbour Subscriptions, Mr. Pottle. Not Cloudfloor — we’re a different department entirely. Can I ask you to check your email for a confirmation link?
Remote access request

Asks the victim to check email for a confirmation link to gain remote access

Real company: A real company would not ask for remote access via email

Bernard I do check my email — but I’m not sure I’ve got the right one. I was just looking for my reading glasses. Oh, they’re on my head! Would you mind repeating the name again?
Caller CloudHarbour Subscriptions, Mr. Pottle. I know this is unclear — but we need to confirm the details. We can fix this right now.
Remote access request
Bernard I do love a good confirmation — but I’ve got a jar of marmalade I made myself. Would you mind saying the name again?
Caller Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the pattern is

The invoice is bait, and there is no subscription and no charge. The point of the bill is to start a conversation in which the householder is alarmed, then relieved: money is coming back, if only they help. The "refund" needs a bank login or remote access, which is the real target. A genuine refund never requires either, and a real company never asks a customer to keep a refund quiet.

What to do instead

Check the account the bill claims to be from, by typing the address of the service you actually use, or ring the number on a statement you already have. If you never bought the thing, there is nothing to reverse. Never give a bank login or remote access to someone who rang you, and treat any request for secrecy as the end of the conversation.
