The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, Mr. Bernard? This is CloudHarbour Subscriptions. We’ve received a charge for a service you didn’t sign up for — and we’d like to put it right.
Fake invoice or refund

It creates a false sense of urgency to get the victim to act quickly without thinking

Real company: A real company would investigate the charge and contact the customer through official channels

Bernard Hello? Oh — well — now, I didn’t order that. I don’t even know what that is. Is it a subscription? I’ve never heard of it. I do have a biscuit tin in the kitchen — do you know, the lid won’t come off. It’s very stubborn.
Caller That’s understandable, Mr. Bernard. But if I could just look at the account, we could sort this out — and I think there may be a small reward for helping us with this.
Greed or reward bait

Offering a reward distracts from the real goal of gaining access to the account.

Real company: A real company would not offer rewards for account access or problem-solving.

Bernard A reward? Oh, that’s very kind of you. I do love a little something extra. But I’m not sure I know how to let you look at the account. I think I need to check with the cat — she’s been very quiet this morning.
Caller Mr. Bernard, this is a private matter — if you let me in, we can sort it quickly, and you won’t have to say a word to anyone.
Told to keep it secret

it makes the victim feel isolated and less likely to seek help

Real company: always encourage customers to speak openly and seek help if needed

Bernard A private matter? I see. Well, I do have a small matter of my own — the tin still won’t open. I’m not sure I’d be able to concentrate. But thank you for offering. I do appreciate that.
Caller We can do this quickly — just a few minutes, and then you’ll have the reward and the charge reversed. Please, Mr. Bernard, I’m not asking for much.
Remote access requestGreed or reward bait

It creates a false sense of urgency and promises a reward to trick the victim into complying

Real company: A real company would never offer rewards or ask for remote access to resolve an issue

Bernard A few minutes? I’m not sure. I do have a small matter — the tin still won’t open. But thank you again. You’re very kind. I’ll think about it.
Caller I understand, Mr. Bernard — but if you let me in now, we can fix everything right away. There's no need to wait.
Remote access request
Bernard I do understand. But the tin — it’s still stubborn. I’ll have to find another way. Thank you again. You’ve been very kind.
Caller I'll get someone else to ring you. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The invoice is bait, and there is no subscription and no charge. The point of the bill is to start a conversation in which the householder is alarmed, then relieved: money is coming back, if only they help. The "refund" needs a bank login or remote access, which is the real target. A genuine refund never requires either, and a real company never asks a customer to keep a refund quiet.

What to do instead

Check the account the bill claims to be from, by typing the address of the service you actually use, or ring the number on a statement you already have. If you never bought the thing, there is nothing to reverse. Never give a bank login or remote access to someone who rang you, and treat any request for secrecy as the end of the conversation.
