The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, Mr. Bernard? This is Brightwick Home Services. We've noticed a small refund was sent to your account by mistake — we'd like you to return the difference before our team notices.
Fake invoice or refund

It creates a false sense of urgency to get the victim to act quickly

Real company: A real company would not ask for money to return a refund

Bernard Hello? Oh — well — now, that's a surprise. I didn't order anything, did I? I'm just sitting here with a cup of tea. What was the refund for? I don't recall any invoices. I do need a new coat of paint on the back step, though. It's getting rather bleak out there.
Caller I'm sorry, Mr. Bernard — I can see this is confusing. The refund was sent in error, and we need to correct it before our team spots the mistake. If we don't, there could be consequences.
Urgency or fear

Creating a sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting quickly without thinking.

Real company: A real company would take time to explain and not use fear to push for immediate action.

Bernard I see. Consequences, you say? That sounds rather serious. I'll need to think about this. Excuse me a moment — where are my reading glasses? Oh, there they are, on my head. I do hope you're not getting cold on the line.
Caller I'm just trying to sort this out quickly, Mr. Bernard. If we act now, we can avoid any issues. In fact, we might even offer a small bonus for your cooperation.
Greed or reward baitUrgency or fear

The promise of a bonus creates a false sense of urgency and entices cooperation.

Real company: A real company would not offer unexpected bonuses to encourage action.

Bernard A bonus? How very kind of you. I'm not sure I'm allowed to accept things just like that. Let me check — no, I can't find my wallet. It's always in the wrong pocket. Do you think the back step would mind if I painted it tomorrow?
Caller I see you're busy, Mr. Bernard — but this needs to be handled today. The usual way is slow, but we can use a quicker method if you're willing. It's simple, I promise.
Unusual payment method

suggests a faster but suspicious way to handle money, making the victim act quickly without thinking

Real company: use standard, secure methods and explain them clearly

Bernard I'll just pop outside and check on the bird. She's been quite noisy today.
Caller I understand, Mr. Bernard — but we're running short on time. If we don't sort this now, it might be harder later. I really do want to make this right.
Urgency or fear
Bernard I do appreciate the concern. Let me just reach for my glasses — oh, there they are. I'm not sure about all this rushing, but I do hope you're having a good day.
Caller Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

There was no refund, so there is no overpayment to return. The story is engineered so the householder feels they are being honest by helping, and the money is then asked for in a form that cannot be reversed: gift cards, a transfer to a stranger, a payment app, sometimes cash through a courier. Asking for an unusual payment method is the clearest signal in the whole script: real bills come on paper or through an app you already use.

What to do instead

No company can take money back out of your account by asking politely for it, and no real firm asks to be repaid in gift cards. Check your own bank balance and statement first. If money really did arrive that should not have, tell your bank and let them reverse it. Never send money on to an address or account given to you over the phone.
