The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support call does not begin with someone claiming to be senior and asking to look at your machine.

“The chair was asked about, the coast was asked about, and the urgency was asked to wait.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Yes, hello, this is the senior technician at Vantage Support Group, taking over your case. Now, about this fault we've logged on your line — I'm authorised to sort it, but I'll need to have a look at your machine first.
Fake authority or brand impersonationUnsolicited contactRemote access request

A new voice with a grander title feels more credible, so the earlier doubts get set aside.

Real company: A real support team contacts you through a channel you already use and never claims a fault you did not report.

Bernard Well, that's very good of you. Now — the milkman, he's owed two pounds and I keep forgetting. Do you have a milkman at your place? I only ask because mine's been coming since before the brown gate went up.
Caller I couldn't say, sir, I've no idea about the milk side of things — I'm here about the fault on your line. As the senior technician I can have this cleared today, but only if you let me have a look at your machine.

A fresh voice with more authority resets the conversation and makes the demand feel like an official next step.

Real company: A real phone company fixes line faults from their end and never needs to look inside your machine.

Bernard Oh, a senior one, are you? That's grand. Have they given you a better chair? Only I had a chap on before and he sounded like he was sat on a crate. What was it you wanted to look at?
Caller The chair's fine, thank you. It's your machine I need to look at, and I do have to say the fault's flagged as urgent on my screen here — if it isn't seen to today it could take the whole line down by morning.

Bernard Down by morning, you say. Hm. Well, I did watch a programme about lighthouses in nineteen eighty-seven, and they had all sorts of bother with the lines — the keeper's had a fellow out twice. Do you get out to the coast much?
Caller Not really, no. Look, this is rather more pressing than the coast — I just need you to let me have a look at your machine, that's all, and we can put the whole thing to bed before anything goes down.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Put it to bed, yes. Oh — hold on, there's a clatter from the back room and it won't be me making it. Won't be a moment.
Caller I'll hold the line, but I'd ask you not to be long — the fault's still ticking away in the background here while we're talking.
Urgency or fearRemote access request
Bernard Right, that's the window rattling, nothing worse. Now — a look, you said. Would I have to be here for it, or could you get on while I see to the front step?
Caller Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
