The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support desk does not need to take over your computer to fix an account, and urgency is a reason to stop, not hurry.

“Bernard asked whether the visit came with a big van or just the one car, and the senior technician's desk put the phone down.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician's desk — who am I speaking to, please?
Fake authority or brand impersonationUnsolicited contact

A grand title and a request for your name makes you feel you reached a real department and owe them an answer.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back, not a title and a question.

Bernard Oh, hello — now you're the second one, are you? The first fella was very patient. Bernard Pottle, that's me. Are you sitting somewhere warm?
Caller Bernard, I'm taking this over from my colleague now, so let's not go over old ground. The matter that's still open on your account needs someone with a bit more authority, and that's me.
Supervisor hand-offFake authority or brand impersonation

A new voice claiming more authority makes the target feel the problem is serious and stops them re-checking earlier doubts.

Real company: A real bank keeps one named contact and gives you a reference number, not a sudden promotion to someone more senior.

Bernard Right, well, I'm glad somebody's got authority, because I haven't a clue. Was it the Vantage Support Group you said? Only my niece works for something like that, in Bexhill.
Caller Vantage Support Group, yes, and we do have a Bexhill office, funnily enough. Now, the open matter — it does need attention today rather than next week, so I'd like to move on it while I've got you.
Urgency or fear

A deadline creates pressure to act before thinking or checking with anyone else.

Real company: A real support team lets you pick the time and puts requests in writing.

Bernard Oh, that's a coincidence then. Hang on, I've got my glasses somewhere about me — ah, they're on my head, aren't they. Now, what was the thing that needed moving?
Caller Right — having had a proper look at this end, the quickest way to settle it is if I could just have a look at your end myself. Nothing for you to fiddle with; I'd take over the machine for a few minutes while you sit back.
Remote access requestFake authority or brand impersonation

Offering to take over the machine sounds helpful and effortless, so the target relaxes and hands over control.

Real company: A real bank or tech firm never asks to remotely control your device to fix an account issue.

Bernard Take over the machine? I shouldn't know where to begin — it took me an hour to get the telly off the wrong channel yesterday.
Caller No beginning needed, that's the beauty of it — you don't touch a thing, I do all of it from here. You'd just let me in and then put your feet up while I run through the checks.
Remote access requestUnsolicited contact
Bernard Let you in? The front door's on the latch, but I don't think you'd want to come all this way. Is it a big van you'd be in, or just the one car?
Caller Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
