The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support line will not need to watch your screen alongside you, and a supervisor title is no proof of anything.

“The senior technician asked to watch the screen alongside Bernard, who said there was only the one chair and the footstool was lumpy.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician speaking. My colleague tells me there's a machine on your line that's been flagged. Now, before we go any further, I need to know who I'm actually speaking to.
Fake authority or brand impersonationUnsolicited contact

A new voice claiming senior rank feels more credible, and demanding your details first puts you on the defensive.

Real company: A real support team identifies itself clearly and lets you call back on a number you look up yourself.

Bernard Oh — hello — are you the supervisor, then? The other fellow said someone senior would come on. Bernard Pottle, that's me, Pottle like the bottle. Now, what was the name of your firm again — Vintage, was it?
Caller Vantage, with an a — Vantage Support Group. And yes, senior, that's me, so let's not lose the thread; I've got your machine flagged here and I'd like a look at it.
Supervisor hand-offFake scan or planted problemsUrgency or fear

Claiming senior status and an existing flag makes the target feel the problem is already confirmed and that resisting would be foolish.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official website.

Bernard A look at what, sorry? My hearing's not the best in this ear — comes and goes. Vintage Support, right you are. We've got a photograph somewhere of my father at a wedding, 1953 I think, and the hat on him, you wouldn't credit it.
Caller Vantage. Look, the photograph can wait — this is a machine matter and I'd rather not leave it sitting there. If you let me have a look at it now, we can settle the whole thing.
Urgency or fearRemote access request

Pushing to act now stops the person from pausing to check whether the request is legitimate.

Real company: A real support team lets you choose when to proceed and never rushes you into granting access.

Bernard Sorry, the what now? You'll have to say it slower, the line's gone crackly. And is it my machine or the one down the road? Because the lady at number nine has a new one and she's always out.
Caller Your machine, at your end, the one you're sitting at. I'm asking for a look — that's all — so I can see for myself what's going on.

Bernard Oh, the one on the table by the window. Well, it's on, I suppose — it's got a little light on it that blinks. Would you like me to fetch my glasses? They're in the kitchen somewhere, you know how it goes.
Caller No, leave all that. Just stay where you are — I want to watch that screen alongside you, that's the only thing I'm after.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Alongside me! Well, that's kind. There's only the one chair, mind, so you'd be on the footstool and it's lumpy. What was it you were after again?
Caller Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
