The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real fault can wait for a visit you arrange yourself. Nobody legitimate needs to be let in over the phone.

“The senior voice took over the fault, asked to look inside, and Bernard asked it to hum the fault so he would know the sound.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Yes, hello, this is the senior technician at Vantage Support Group — I've picked this up from my colleague. Now, about the fault on your line, sir.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new voice with a grander title feels more credible, so the target relaxes and stops questioning the story.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on the official website.

Bernard Oh — Varnish Support, is it? Well, that's a nice name, that. I'm glad somebody's picked it up, because the first chap kept going on about a fault and I couldn't make head nor tail of it. Half deaf in this one ear, you see — the left. Is it cold where you are?
Caller It's Vantage, sir, and yes, chilly enough. The fault my colleague mentioned — I'd like to have a look at your line myself, if you'd let me.

Bernard A look at the line, right you are. Hold on — my spectacles, I had them a moment ago. Oh, they're up here on my head, silly old fool. You were saying about a look at something, weren't you?
Caller Right, sir — that line of yours is flagged as faulty and it could drop out at any moment, so I'd rather not leave it sitting there. If you'd let me have a look, we can settle it.
Urgency or fearRemote access request

A looming deadline makes people act fast and skip the checks they would normally make.

Real company: A real provider books a repair at your convenience and never needs to look inside your device.

Bernard Drop out, you say? Well, that would explain it — half the time I pick the thing up and it's just a hum. Mind you, the fence is in a worse state than the phone. Next door's cat's been at it again, walking along the top like it owns the place.
Caller The fence is a shame, sir, but it's the line I'm worried about — a hum today is a dead line tomorrow. That's why I need to get in and have a look before it goes completely.

Bernard Dead line tomorrow, that's a gloomy thought. Now, when you say get in — in where, exactly? Because I've had a look and I can't find a single thing that looks like a fault. Unless it's that hum. Is a hum a fault?
Caller In to the equipment, sir, that's all — the bits behind the set that you can't see from where you're sitting. That hum is exactly what a fault sounds like, so if you'd give me a look, I can be sure.

It reframes access to the device as a harmless peek, while inventing a fault so the request feels like help rather than intrusion.

Real company: A real support team never needs to look inside your device from afar without a booked appointment and your clear consent.

Bernard Oh, behind the set. I shouldn't go poking about back there, I'd have the whole lot down and then where would I be. Could you hum it for me? So I know what I'm listening for.
Caller Honestly, I don't know why I bother. Good afternoon.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
