The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support line will not claim a fault it can only see from its end and then need to be let into your machine.

“The senior technician said he needed to be in on the machine, and Bernard asked whether the arrangement needed feeding.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Yes, hello, this is the senior technician at Vantage Support Group — I'm taking over from my colleague, so you're in proper hands now. Whatever the first lad told you, we can sort it out properly if you just let me have a look at the machine.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-offRemote access request

A new voice claiming seniority feels more trustworthy, so people relax and stop questioning the earlier steps.

Real company: A real support firm gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official website.

Bernard Well, that's a relief, because the first one wasn't much cop if I'm honest. Senior, you say? Here, have you eaten? My father was a senior something, in the Water Board, or perhaps it was the gas — anyway. A look at the machine, you said. Which machine would that be, the washing one?
Caller Not the washing one, no. It's the computer I need to look at — the one your first caller was already dealing with before I took over.

Bernard Oh, the computer. Right you are. Only I don't think anyone's been dealing with it, it's just sat there being a computer. It's got a lovely green light on it, I'm quite fond of it. What would you be looking at, exactly? And are you warm enough where you are?
Caller The green light's a good sign, that's the machine I mean. Look, we've had reports of a fault on your line and it needs checking before it causes trouble — I really do need to see it, and I'd rather not be here all evening.
Urgency or fearFake scan or planted problems

A vague threat of trouble plus time pressure pushes the person to act before they think to check.

Real company: A real provider writes to you about a fault and books a visit at a time that suits you.

Bernard A fault on my line? Well, that's news to me, it's been quiet as anything. Hold on — is this the same as the thing the gas board were on about, or different? And you'd rather not be here all evening, does that mean you're coming round? Because the front step is slippery.
Caller No, nobody's coming round, and it's nothing to do with the gas people — different matter entirely. The fault's on the line itself, and I can only see it from my end if you let me have a proper look at your machine.

Bernard Oh, from your end. I see, I see. Only I've got the telephone in one hand and I'd need the other for the looking. And my eyes aren't what they were — I've got spectacles somewhere, they'll be under the paper. Would you like me to fetch them, or can you manage from your end?
Caller From my end, yes — that's rather the point. You don't need your spectacles at all, I just need to be in on the machine for a moment, that's all it takes.

Bernard In on it. Oh, like being let into the house but through the wires. Well, that's very modern. Does it need feeding, this arrangement? Only I had one of those before and it wanted updating every Tuesday, and I never got on with it.
Caller I'll ring you back another day. Bye now.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
