The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support line never needs remote access to your computer to fix an urgent problem, so a sudden hand-off to a senior who wants to look at your machine is the scam itself.

“The senior technician was urgent about a look at the machine and never got one.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Right, hello, this is the senior technician at Vantage Support Group, taking over from my colleague. So sorry about the mix-up, but I'll be quick — I just need to confirm we're through to the right person.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new, more senior voice resets the conversation and makes the earlier doubts feel rude to raise.

Real company: A real support team keeps one named contact and gives you a reference number you can call back on.

Bernard Oh — Varnish Support, is it? Well, you've got Bernard. And you're the senior one, are you? My word. Only I was just telling your other fellow, the back step wants painting before winter and I've had the tin out since Tuesday.
Caller Yes, Vantage, that's the one — senior technician, that's me. And that's great news about the step, but I'll be quick, Bernard, because we've got a rather urgent flag on your account.
Supervisor hand-offUrgency or fear

Claiming senior status makes the caller seem more credible and harder to question, and the sudden urgency stops Bernard from pausing to check.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and time to verify the issue through official channels before anything else happens.

Bernard Urgent, is it? Well now. Only it's Wednesday, isn't it — no, hold on — it's Thursday. I've had the ladder out since Tuesday, you see, so the days have gone a bit soft on me. What's the flag about?
Caller That's Thursday, yes, spot on. And the flag, well, that's the urgent bit — we're seeing some unusual activity come through, and I'd rather not leave it sitting overnight.
Urgency or fear

A vague hint of trouble plus a deadline makes people act fast before they stop to check.

Real company: A real bank states the specific concern in writing and never rushes you off the phone.

Bernard Overnight, in this weather? It'll be damp by morning. Oh — you mean the flag. What sort of activity? Mavis does click about on the table sometimes, if that counts for anything.
Caller Not Mavis, no — and I really don't want to alarm you, Bernard, but this needs sorting today rather than tomorrow. So if we can get me a look at the machine, just the once, I can clear the whole thing off and you can get back to that step.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear

A calm, friendly tone plus a same-day deadline makes letting a stranger onto the computer feel like a small favour rather than a risk.

Real company: A real bank or software firm never asks to look at your machine over the phone, and would let you call back on a number you find yourself.

Bernard A look. Right. Well, it's an old thing, the computer, and it lives in the back room under the good cardigan. Would it mind being looked at, do you think? Or — you're not thirsty, are you? I've got the kettle just on.
Caller That's very kind, but no — I'll be quick, honestly, and then you can have your tea. The look, Bernard, that's all I need, and then I'm off the phone and out of your hair.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear

It rushes the target past the ask by promising to be quick and framing it as a small favour.

Real company: A real support team explains what it needs in writing and never pressures you to hurry.

Bernard Sorry, I've lost the thread of it — now, what was it you were saying?

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
