The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support desk does not need you to sit at the machine while it watches through you, and a hand-off to a supervisor is not proof of anything.

“The caller wanted to see the screen through Bernard, and Bernard was in the hall, and the fault was left to sit.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here. My colleague's handed you over, so let's not start from the top — I just need a quick look at your machine.
Fake authority or brand impersonationRemote access requestSupervisor hand-off

A senior title and a hand-off make the request feel already approved, so the target skips the questions they would normally ask.

Real company: A real support team opens a ticket you can look up yourself and never cold-calls to inspect your machine.

Bernard Oh — a look, right you are. Now, is that the same Vantage as my cousin Reg? He sold insurance, mind, not machines, and he was terrible at it. Sorry — what was it you wanted a look at?
Caller No relation to Reg, I shouldn't think. It's your computer I need a look at — my colleague said he was halfway through and couldn't finish.
Supervisor hand-offRemote access requestUnsolicited contact

Naming a colleague who is already partway through makes the request feel like a routine continuation rather than a new demand.

Real company: A real support team logs the case, gives you a reference number, and lets you call back on a number you look up yourself.

Bernard Halfway through, was he? I don't remember him getting anywhere at all. Hold on, my hearing aid's doing that whistle again — there we go. What was it you were after, a look at the machine?
Caller Yes, the machine, and I should tell you there's a fault logged against it right now that won't sit there politely forever. That's why I'd like to get my look in before the day's out.
Urgency or fearFake authority or brand impersonation

A vague looming fault creates pressure to act before the day ends, so the target skips checking.

Real company: A real service team books a visit at a time that suits you and puts any fault in writing.

Bernard A fault logged, you say. Well, it's the radio in the front room that's been crackling, if that's the one. Is it the radio you mean? Only it's a lovely old thing and I'd hate for it to be a fault.
Caller Not the radio — your computer, the one at your desk. Look, I'm happy to talk about the radio after, but right now this fault needs my look and it needs it today.

Bernard Ah, the one at my desk. Well, you're welcome to come and look, but I'm not sure it'd be worth your petrol — the desk has a drawer that sticks. Would you like a cup of something while you're at it?
Caller Coming out isn't how we do it — a look means I see the screen from here, through you. Are you sitting in front of it now?
Remote access requestFake authority or brand impersonation
Bernard Sitting in front of it? Oh no, I'm in the hall. Is that a problem? Only I've a cousin who sold insurance and he was forever wanting to see things from where I was standing, and it never came to much.
Caller I'll try again when the line's behaving. Good afternoon.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
