The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support line will not claim your whole house is about to drop off unless you let them in tonight.

“Nothing was installed, nothing was paid, and the call went nowhere.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician speaking — my colleague says you're on the line and not quite finished with us. What's this I'm hearing about a photograph?
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new, more senior voice implies the problem is serious and that you are already mid-way through a process you cannot easily leave.

Real company: A real support team logs the case and tells you how to reach them through official channels, not by surprise escalation.

Bernard Oh, the photograph, yes — my niece sent one, the whole family on a beach, and there's a little dog in it that nobody claims. Do you have a dog? Only I've been meaning to ask somebody all week.
Caller No dog, I'm afraid — I'm on the clock here. Look, the reason I've been brought in is that the chap before me couldn't get this sorted, so I'm taking it over personally.

Bernard Well that's good of you, taking things over personally. Are they feeding you properly, wherever you're sitting? Only my late wife used to say you can hear it in a person's voice when they've skipped lunch.
Caller I've had something, thanks. But listen — this has been logged against this line for a while now, and the longer it sits the worse the record reads for me. I need you to let me have a look.
Urgency or fearRemote access request

A ticking clock makes people act fast to protect themselves before they stop to check who is asking.

Real company: A real support team never asks to look at your device on a cold call, and never rushes you with deadlines.

Bernard A look at what, sorry? You'll have to bear with me, this ear of mine plays up when I'm sat in the armchair. And what record is it — like a gramophone record, or more the sort you keep in a drawer?
Caller Nothing like that. It's a note against your line saying the fault isn't cleared — and I can clear it, but only if you let me have a look.

Bernard Oh, a note. Well now, get yourself comfortable and I'll just move this cushion — there we are. You'd think they'd have written, wouldn't you. My father always said a letter's worth two phone calls, though he never posted any of them.
Caller He had a point, your father. Except letters take days and this thing on your line won't wait — the whole house could drop off by tonight if I don't get in and look.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Drop off? The house isn't going anywhere, and neither am I. Since the seventies it's stood, and it'll stand tonight. Look, I'll let you get on.
Caller I'll send it in the post instead. Save us both the trouble. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
