The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support line will not rush you into letting it look at your machine before you have even checked the name.

“The senior man wanted a look at the machine and got offered two pounds of change and a lighthouse story.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Yes, hello, this is the senior technician at Vantage Support Group — I'm taking over the case now. Before we go any further, I just need to understand what's on the screen in front of you.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new voice with a grander title feels more credible, so people relax and answer questions they would have refused the first caller.

Real company: A real support team keeps the same named contact and confirms the case reference in writing before asking anything.

Bernard Oh, hello — senior, is it? The young chap before you kept saying Vantage but I wrote down Vintage, so I've had it as Vintage all along. Now, screen. Well, there's the telly and there's the clock. Which one do you mean?
Caller Ah, Vintage, Vantage, it's all the same office, don't worry about the paperwork. The clock won't help us — it's the machine with the screen, the one you'd use for letters and such.

Waving away the confusing names and paperwork makes the caller seem like an insider, so the target stops checking and follows along.

Real company: A real firm gives one clear company name and puts any change of details in writing before asking for anything.

Bernard The little typewriter thing, that's the one. It's in the back room and the door sticks something awful, so I'd have to put you down a moment. Are you warm enough where you are, by the way? You sound a bit echoey.
Caller It's fine back here, I've got plenty on. But I would ask you to stay with me on this, because these things move fast and we've got a window closing on your account — if we don't get eyes on it shortly, the whole thing could lock up on you.
Urgency or fearUnsolicited contact

A closing window makes people act before they think, so they skip checking whether the call is real.

Real company: A real bank explains the issue in writing and gives you time to call back on a number you look up yourself.

Bernard Lock up, you say. Hmm. Well, that reminds me — I had a letter from the council I meant to open, weeks back, and now I can't think where I put it. Do you think that's the sort of thing that locks up?
Caller No, sir, the council's not my department. Look, what I need is for you to let me have a look at that machine — just a look, I'll do all the work, you won't have to touch a thing.

Bernard Just a look, I see. Well, before anyone looks at anything, I owe the fellow who brings the bottles two pounds, and I'd rather square that up first. You don't happen to carry change, do you?
Caller I haven't got change on me, I'm sat at a desk. Sir, please — the account, the machine, if you could just set it down and let me have that look, we can be done and I'll leave you to it.

Bernard Oh, you're at a desk, are you. Nice and warm in there, I hope. Now — did I ever tell you about the programme on lighthouses, back in eighty-seven? Sat up half the night, I did.
Caller I'll get someone else to ring you. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
