The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A company that phones you about a fault can always explain it in plain words, and if it cannot, there is no fault.

“The caller claimed a technical fault but could not say what it was, and Bernard asked whether it lived in the telly or the telephone.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here — sorry, who's this? I've had your case passed to me and I need to sort it out properly.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new voice claiming seniority feels like escalation and care, so the target relaxes and re-explains rather than questioning the call.

Real company: A real support team contacts you through channels you already use and never cold-calls to take over a case you never raised.

Bernard Oh — hello. Bernard, Bernard Pottle. I was just talking to a young lad about something or other, and then there was a click. Are you the supervisor, then? The Vintner people?
Caller Vantage, Bernard, Vantage Support Group — the lad's passed you up to me because it needs a senior hand. So let's get this sorted.
Supervisor hand-offFake authority or brand impersonation
Bernard Vantage, right, yes. Well, I'm glad of the company. I've got a library book here I keep forgetting to take back — three weeks past, they'll be sending someone round at this rate. What was it you needed?
Caller Never mind the library, this is rather more pressing — there's a problem flagged on your line and it needs dealing with today, not next week.
Urgency or fearUnsolicited contact

A vague problem plus a deadline makes the listener anxious to resolve it fast, before thinking clearly.

Real company: A real provider states the specific issue in writing and gives you time to verify it through official channels.

Bernard Today — right. Well, you'll have to forgive me, the radio's on in the other room and I've lost the thread of it. What sort of problem is it, then?
Caller That's why I've been handed your case, Bernard — it's a technical fault and I can't clear it from my end. If you'd just let me have a look at your machine, I'll sort the whole thing.
Remote access requestSupervisor hand-offUrgency or fear

The hand-off makes the caller sound like a specialist with authority, so letting them in feels like the quick fix.

Real company: A real support team never asks to connect to your computer from an unexpected call. You call them, not the reverse.

Bernard Have a look at it — I see. Is that the telly or the telephone, though? Only I've got a lad coming to look at the aerial on Thursday, and I don't want the two of them bumping into each other.
Caller Not the telly and not the aerial — your computer, Bernard, that's the one with the fault on it. Everyone else on your road has had it seen to already, you're the last.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard The last one again — story of my life. And I'd have to be in front of it, would I? Only it's upstairs and these knees don't care for stairs after four.
Caller Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
