The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A caller who claims to be a senior technician and wants to look inside your computer is not there to help you.

“The caller kept asking for a look at the computer, and Bernard kept asking what he would be looking for.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here — they've handed you up to me because this one needs a proper look. Now, about that computer of yours.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A title and a hand-off make the caller sound senior and official, so people lower their guard and stop questioning.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official line.

Bernard Oh — well — now, "vintage," did you say? That's rather nice. I've got a library book here that's rather vintage too, three weeks overdue if you can believe it. They'll be wanting it back. What was it you wanted a look at?
Caller The book can wait its turn, sir. What I need is a look at your computer, so if you'd just let me have that, we can be done here.
Remote access requestSupervisor hand-off

Asking to look at your computer reframes control of your device as a routine step, so you focus on finishing the call rather than on what access means.

Real company: A real bank or support team never asks to look at your computer to resolve an account matter, and will tell you to call the number on your card.

Bernard Let you have it? It's a heavy old thing, you'd want a car. Oh — you mean a look at it. Sorry, my left ear's a bit off. What would you be looking for, exactly?
Caller Faults, sir, faults — and there's no time to be delicate about it, given the state things are in. So if you'd just let me have that look, we can stop this getting any worse.
Urgency or fearRemote access request

It rushes the listener past the question of who is calling and what the problem actually is.

Real company: A real support team states the problem plainly and lets you verify the call through official channels first.

Bernard Faults. Right. Is that like the telly going all snowy? Only mine does that of an evening, and I've found if I give the aerial a wiggle it settles. Would that be the sort of thing?
Caller Not quite the same thing, sir, but I do need to get in there and see for myself. So if you'd let me have that look, we can sort it before it spreads.

Bernard Before it spreads. That does sound serious. Hang on — I've left the seat up in the greenhouse, I shan't be a tick. Right, I'm back. Where were we? You wanted to have a look at something of mine.
Caller Vantage Support Group, sir, senior technician — and I've been very patient about this. The look, sir, if you'd just let me have it.

Bernard Course you have. Very good of you to ring at all, really — nobody does. Sorry, what was the name again? Vintage something? My memory's like a sieve these days.
Caller Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
