The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support line never needs you to say yes before it can do anything at all.

“The caller said he could not do a thing from his end until Bernard said yes, and Bernard went to see to the fire.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here — I'm told there's a case open on your line. Whatever that was about the grate, it's not my department; what I need is a look at your machine.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-offRemote access request

A new voice claiming senior rank makes the problem feel escalated and official, so people comply without rechecking who they are.

Real company: A real support team confirms your identity and case number through official channels before anyone asks to look at your machine.

Bernard Oh, a senior one, that's good. Now, when you say a look — would that be me bringing it to you, or do you come out? Only the coal fire needs another shovel and I don't like leaving it.
Caller No need to bring it anywhere and no one's coming out — you just let me have a look at it from here, it's the work of a moment. And the open case says your machine's been flagged, so I'd rather not be sat on this.

It frames remote access as quick and harmless while hinting at trouble if the caller is delayed.

Real company: A real support team never asks to look at your device from their end without a request you started yourself.

Bernard Flagged, is it. That reminds me of a programme about lighthouses, oh, years back — the lamp went round and round and you'd think it'd make you dizzy. Was that eighty-seven? No — eighty-six. Anyway, what is it you'd want me doing?
Caller You just let me take a look at the machine from here, that's all I'm after. I'd rather we didn't sit on it, because the longer this waits the messier it gets.

Bernard Well, you're very welcome to look, but the fire's gone low and I can't leave it sitting. Would you mind holding on just a tick while I see to it?
Caller Bernard, before you go — just let me have that look while you're up, it won't take a moment. I can't do a thing from my end until you say yes.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Oh, I'm up now anyway. Kettle's on — would you like a cup while you wait? I've got the good leaves somewhere, I'm sure of it.
Caller I don't need a cup, I need that look at the machine. That's the only thing standing between us and sorting this out.

Bernard The machine, is it? Which one would that be — the big one in the front room, or the little one that keeps getting knocked about?
Caller Honestly, I don't know why I bother. Good afternoon.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
