The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support person will not need to look inside your computer to fix a ticket, and a closing window is a pressure tactic, not a deadline.

“The senior one said the window on the ticket was closing, and Bernard asked what the queue had ever done to anybody.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here — sorry, my colleague handed this one up to me. Before we go any further, I need you to confirm you're the account holder so I know I'm speaking to the right person.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A title and a hand-off make the caller sound vetted and important, so people answer questions they would normally refuse.

Real company: A real support team identifies itself clearly and contacts you through channels you can verify yourself, not a surprise call.

Bernard Oh, you're the senior one, are you? That's good, the other lad sounded a bit rushed. Now then — account holder for what, sorry? I've got a slipper gone right under the chair and I'm half on my knees here, so you'll have to bear with me.
Caller For the support case, sir — the one my colleague opened. You're the name on it, so I just need you to confirm that's you and we can move this along properly.

Bernard The name on it. Right. Well, it'd be Pottle, but whether I'm the right Pottle is another matter — there's my brother, only he's in Devon. Which case was it again? I've had a lot of letters this month.
Caller Pottle, right — that matches. And I should say there's a bit of a clock on this one, sir, because the window on your ticket closes shortly and then it goes back to the bottom of the queue.
Urgency or fear

A closing window makes people act fast before they can think or check with anyone else.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and lets you call back at your own pace.

Bernard A clock on it. Is there now. Well, the queue never did anybody any harm, did it. Oh — hold on, I've got the slipper. It's the left one, always the left one. What was it you wanted me to do with this ticket?
Caller Look, this is quicker if I just have a look at your computer myself — nothing drastic, just a peek at the screen so I can see what's actually going on in there.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear

Offering to look himself feels helpful and casual, so the target lowers their guard and hands over control of the screen.

Real company: A real support team never takes control of your screen from an unsolicited call, and would let you start the contact through official channels.

Bernard A peek. On the screen. Oh, well, now, that's a thought. My nephew set this up for me and I haven't the faintest what's on it — mostly it's the solitaire. Do you play cards at all? You sound like a man who could do with a sit-down.
Caller Solitaire's not really my area, sir — but that's rather the point, isn't it, if something's sitting on there that shouldn't be. So if you could just let me in for a moment.

Bernard Sitting on there. That's worrying, that. What sort of thing? Not a creature? Mavis would have something to say about that. Speaking of which — she's gone very quiet, and that usually means she's at the biscuit tin. Give me half a tick.
Caller Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
