The Supervisor Hand-Off
A real support line never needs to look inside your device, and being passed to a senior is not proof of anything.
“The senior one said he could not see the machine from there, and Bernard offered to hold it up to the phone.”
The call
Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.
A senior title and a hand-off from a colleague make the caller sound vetted and important, so people lower their guard.
Real company: A real support firm gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official line.
A new voice with authority makes the problem feel real and important, and the rush discourages careful thought.
Real company: A real bank lets you call back on the number printed on your card, and never rushes you off the phone.
Asking to see the machine sounds like routine help, and the confusion act makes the request feel like a small favour rather than a demand.
Real company: A real company never asks to connect to your computer from an unsolicited call. It gives you a number to call back on its official line.
What the pattern is
The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.
What to do instead
Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
