The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support line will not claim your case is flagged and urgent to get onto your computer, so hang up and ring the number you know.

“The senior one was seeing activity on a line that had nothing on it but the fire, and Bernard had a chair to stay in.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Right, Mr. Bernard, this is the senior technician at Vantage Support Group — I'm taking over from my colleague because your case has been flagged as priority.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new, more senior voice sounds like escalation and care, so the target relaxes and trusts the next request more.

Real company: A real support team keeps one named contact and gives you a reference number you can call back on.

Bernard Priority, is it? Well, that's a first for me. My late wife used to say I was priority number one at getting under her feet. Now — Vantage, you said? I've got a cousin in Vantage, or near it. Is it near the coast?
Caller No, sir, it's not a place as such — Vantage Support Group, we handle cases like yours. And yours is the one on my screen right now, so if you could let me have a look at the machine, I can take it from here.

A calm, official-sounding name and the claim of personal ownership make the request feel routine and already decided.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official website.

Bernard A look, right you are. Give me a moment — this ear of mine whistles something dreadful when I cup it, it's doing it now. There. Now, which machine are we on about? Because the washing machine's been making a funny noise too, and I don't think you'd want a look at that.
Caller Your computer, sir, the one you're sitting at, not the laundry. And I'd get to it before it's too late — I'm seeing activity on your line that shouldn't be there.
Urgency or fearFake scan or planted problems

A vague threat of hidden activity creates alarm, and the ticking clock stops the person from pausing to check.

Real company: A real support team never cold-calls about activity on your line, and never rushes you with a deadline.

Bernard Activity, is it? Well, I've had nothing on but the fire and the wireless. Hold on though, there's a bird outside doing my telephone noise, does that count as activity? Give me a moment, I'll just see to the fire first.
Caller No, don't go anywhere, sir — leave the fire. This is your computer we're talking about, and if I don't get a look at it shortly, I can't answer for what happens next.

Bernard I shan't be a tick. That's better, coals are low, always are around this hour. Now then — look at it. Do I have to be sitting at the thing? Because I'm quite comfortable in this chair and I've only the one pair of slippers.
Caller The chair's fine, sir, I don't need you to move. Just let me have a look at the screen — that's all this needs, and then I'm out of your way.
Remote access requestUnsolicited contact
Bernard A look at the screen. Oh, I should say, I've got my reading glasses somewhere, and I can never see a thing without them. Would your machine know where they've got to? Remind me of your firm's name again, it's gone clean out of my head.
Caller I'll ring you back another day. Bye now.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
