The Supervisor Hand-Off
A real fault record holds the details and the name together, so anyone who has one but not the other is guessing.
“The caller could not produce the fault he had come to fix, and Bernard pointed out that a record and its details travel together.”
The call
Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.
A new voice with a grander title feels more credible, so people drop their guard and comply.
Real company: A real support team identifies you by a reference number and never needs to look at your machine to discuss a report.
Claiming senior status and a logged fault makes the problem feel official and already decided, so agreeing seems like the only sensible step.
Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official line.
It invents a problem on your own machine and makes it sound already confirmed, so you feel you must act now.
Real company: A real support team never calls out of the blue about a fault and never asks to view your screen.
What the pattern is
The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.
What to do instead
Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
