The Supervisor Hand-Off

The Supervisor Hand-Off
A real support desk doesn't hand you up the chain to a supervisor who demands to look at your machine before you've asked for help.
“The senior technician claimed the file was flagged and the account would be locked by nightfall, and Bernard asked whether it was warm where he was calling from.”
The call
Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.
A senior title and a hint of impatience make Bernard feel he is getting special attention and should not waste the man's time.
Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a callback number you can verify yourself before anything else happens.
A calm senior voice sounds more credible, and the promise of a file and a deadline makes the caller seem organised and in control.
Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on the official website.
Asking to look at the machine sounds like routine help, so the victim hands over control without realising what it allows.
Real company: A real bank or support team never takes remote control of your computer to fix an account.
What the pattern is
The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.
What to do instead
Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
