The Supervisor Hand-Off

Anyone who says they can look at your line from their end is not from a real company.

“The caller said the fault was active and wanted to look in. Bernard asked what colour the visitor would be coming as.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician speaking. My colleague says there's a problem on your line, so let's get it looked at properly.
Fake authority or brand impersonationUnsolicited contact

A title and a colleague's referral make the caller sound official and already vouched for, so people lower their guard.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on the company's own website.

Bernard Oh — Varnish Support, is it? My nephew's in that line of work, or was it roofing. Anyway, you'll have to speak up a touch, the fire's crackling. I'm just about to give it another shovel.
Caller It's Vantage, sir, with a T. Forget the nephew — this is a priority fault on your connection and I'd rather we had a proper look before it goes any further.

A calm, confident voice taking charge makes the listener feel something serious is being handled by someone who knows best.

Real company: A real provider identifies itself clearly, states the fault in writing, and never asks you to forget a previous conversation.

Bernard Vantage, right you are. Well, it'll have to wait a minute, the coal's gone all sulky and it won't catch without a bit of a stir. What was it you wanted a look at, the line?
Caller The fault, sir, the fault — it's flagged as active right now and it really does want looking at today rather than next week. So if I could just have a look at what's going on in there.
Urgency or fearRemote access request

A ticking clock makes people act fast and skip the question of whether the caller has any right to look.

Real company: A real support team books a proper appointment and never needs to look inside your device on the spot.

Bernard Today, is it? My diary's not what it was but I don't recall a fault. Is it the telephone line or the television, because the television's been doing a thing where it goes a bit green at the edges.
Caller Could be either, that's the trouble, which is why I need to have a look myself. Nobody here can see your end from ours, so it's a matter of letting me in to check it.
Remote access requestFake scan or planted problems

Framing the problem as invisible from their side makes handing over control feel like the only way to get answers.

Real company: A real support team never needs to take control of your device to check it, and will say so plainly.

Bernard Letting you in? Oh, you mean the house. I'd have to tidy up a bit first, the front room's full of papers. What colour would you be coming as — is there a uniform, or do you just arrive in a coat?
Caller No coat, no visiting, sir — I mean we'd look at it remotely, through the line itself. Senior technicians like myself do this every day, so if you'll just give me the nod I'll get straight in.

Bernard Through the line. Well, that's clever, though I don't see how you'd manage it — the line's got a kink in it by the hall where I've hung a picture. Hold on, that's the coal again.
Caller Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
