The Supervisor Hand-Off

A sudden promotion to a senior technician is a script change, not a real escalation, and a real fault report does not need a second person sitting alongside you.

“The caller threatened the whole line by morning. Bernard asked for a name first, and the post was offered instead.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here — the first lad's handed this up to me because it needs a proper look. Now, about this fault on your line.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new voice with a grander title makes the problem feel official and escalates the pressure to comply.

Real company: A real support team keeps one named contact and gives you a reference number, not a vague promotion to a senior technician.

Bernard Oh — Vantage, you said? Funny, the first fellow kept calling it Vintage. Now then — a fault, is it? Only the girl down the lane said her line was crackling too, and I said that'll be the damp.
Caller Vantage, yes. Whatever he called it, I'm the senior technician and I'm taking this over now — the fault's logged against your line specifically, so it needs a proper look rather than more guessing about damp.

Bernard Congratulations, that's a step up. Listen, my back step wants a coat of paint before the cold, and I can't be up a ladder with the phone in my hand — so what was it you needed from me?
Caller Well, keep the ladder out of it — the fault's worsening, and if it's not looked at soon the whole line could go down. I just need a look at your machine before that happens.
Urgency or fearRemote access request

A looming outage creates panic, so the target focuses on stopping the damage instead of checking who is calling.

Real company: A real provider schedules a visit or sends written notice, and never needs to look inside your machine to fix a line fault.

Bernard A look, right — but the machine's tucked away in the corner and I'd have to shift a fair bit to reach it. What's it you're hoping to see on it, exactly?
Caller Your fault report, sitting in the system — I can only see it once I'm on the machine alongside you. So if you'd just let me have a look, I can tell you what's happened to it.

Bernard Oh, alongside, like two men reading the same newspaper. Won't be a minute — I've just put the pan on and the gas is at that funny notch where it goes out if you don't watch it.
Caller The pan can wait, this really can't — the whole line could be down by morning and then you're ringing the neighbours to report it, not us. Just a look, then you can get back to it.
Urgency or fearRemote access request
Bernard The neighbours wouldn't answer before nine anyhow, they've a new baby. And you still haven't told me your name — are you the young fellow from before, or one of his lot?
Caller I'll send it in the post instead. Save us both the trouble. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
