The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support firm will not hand you to a supervisor to hurry you into letting them poke about on your computer.

“The senior man took the case over and asked for a poke about on the machine. Bernard asked whether that was the telly or the little radio.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here — my colleague tells me you've been having trouble with your line. I'll be taking this over, so let's not waste any more of the day.
Fake authority or brand impersonationUrgency or fear

A senior title and a claim of taking over make the caller sound official and in charge, so people stop questioning.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official line.

Bernard Oh, you're the senior one, are you? That's good, my cousin Eric had a senior chap at his insurance place and he said it took three letters before anyone could spell his surname. What was it you said you were from — Varnish, was it?
Caller Vantage, sir, Vantage Support Group — the same firm my colleague was just on about. I've got the whole case in front of me now, so let's get this sorted before the day's out.

A new voice claiming to hold the full case feels like escalation and competence, so the target relaxes and stops questioning.

Real company: A real firm gives you a reference number and a callback number you can verify independently before anything is discussed.

Bernard Varnish, right, I've got it now. Well, it's very good of you. Are you warm enough where you're sitting? Only it's turned bitter here, and I've got the little window shut and everything.
Caller Warmer than I'd like, truth be told. Now the thing is, sir, every hour this stays open the worse it looks on our board, so I really do need that look at your system sooner rather than later.
Urgency or fear
Bernard Oh, the board, that sounds a fuss. I did have a cousin who worked on a board — insurance, mind, not anything technical — and he said the trick was never to hurry. What is it you're wanting to look at, exactly?
Caller Your machine, sir — I just need a look at it, that's all. If you'll let me have a poke about on there I can see exactly what's gone wrong and put it right.
Remote access requestUnsolicited contact

Asking to 'have a look' sounds like helpful troubleshooting, so the request feels like service rather than a stranger reaching into your computer.

Real company: A real support team never asks to poke around your machine from a cold call. You contact them first through official channels.

Bernard A poke about. Hm. Well, my machine — is that the telly or the little radio in the kitchen? Because the radio's got a fault of its own, it keeps drifting off to the shipping forecast.
Caller Not the radio, sir, and not the telly — your computer. The one we've had flagged up on our side all day, which is why I'm here with the case file rather than my colleague.

Bernard The computer. Oh. Now that's a thing, that is — it's my neighbour's boy who set that up, years back, and I've never rightly known what to do with it. Has it gone wrong, then, has it?
Caller Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
