The Cold-Call "Virus"

phone call · TechGuard Solutions · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, is this Bernard? I'm calling from TechGuard Solutions. We've been receiving some unusual activity from your device, and I'd like to have a look at it to make sure everything's secure.
Unsolicited contact

The caller pretends to be from a security company to gain trust and access to the target's device.

Real company: A real company would not call out of the blue about suspicious activity on a device.

Bernard Hello there — yes, that's me. I've been trying to get this biscuit tin open for ages. It's been stuck for weeks now.
Caller This is urgent, Bernard. We've detected a security breach on your system. If we don't resolve it now, your personal information could be at risk.
Urgency or fearFake authority or brand impersonation

Creating a sense of panic makes the victim act without thinking

Real company: Contact you through official channels and give time to respond

Bernard Oh — I'm sorry — I've been meaning to call you. I've got a jigsaw that's been missing one piece since Easter. I think it might be in the garden somewhere.
Caller We don't have much time, Bernard. The longer we wait, the more damage could be done. Let me have a look at it — just a moment.
Urgency or fear
Bernard Oh, I'd love that — but I've got this library book that's three weeks overdue. I think I left it on the bus the other day. Oh, and do you know what year it is? I keep getting that wrong.
Caller We need to act now, Bernard. I'm seeing strange activity from your device — it's like someone's trying to access your files. Let me check it before it's too late.
Fake scan or planted problems

Creating a false sense of urgency to pressure the victim into acting immediately

Real company: Contact the user through official channels and provide clear steps to verify the issue

Bernard Oh — I'm so sorry — I think I left the radio on. I've been meaning to turn it off all day. Do you know what time it is? I always get that mixed up with the post.
Caller This is critical, Bernard. Your system is showing signs of being compromised. Let me have a look — we can sort it out in a moment.
Fake scan or planted problems
Bernard Oh — I think I left something on the counter. I can't seem to get it open. Do you know what day it is? I keep thinking it's Thursday.
Caller I'll try again when the line's behaving. Good afternoon.

What the pattern is

Nobody can see warnings coming from a home computer. The caller has no monitoring centre, no record of the household and no way to know what is on the machine. The "evidence" is whatever the householder is persuaded to look at (an event log full of ordinary notices, a setting that has always been that way), and it is read out as if it were damage. The whole call exists to reach one moment: the householder opening a remote-control tool and handing over the keyboard.

What to do instead

A real security company does not ring out of the blue about your computer, and a real support desk will not ask for remote access to a machine it does not manage. Hang up. If you are worried about the computer, contact the maker or your own IT person using a number you looked up yourself, and run the security tool that is already installed.
