The Pop-Up with a Phone Number

pop-up · SafeNet Billing · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Pop-Up with a Phone Number

No real company will threaten you with data loss to get you to call a number.

“I'll ring you back another day. Bye now.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello? Yes, I can see the warning on your screen. We're from SafeNet Billing, and we need you to call the number shown immediately to resolve the security threat.
Fake pop-up with phone numberFake authority or brand impersonation

The fake pop-up creates a false sense of urgency and legitimacy to trick the victim into calling a scam number.

Real company: A real company would never display a phone number in a pop-up and would direct you to official websites or customer service channels.

Bernard Hello? Oh — I saw that, yes — but I thought it was one of those pop-ups from the radio. Do you know, I've been meaning to paint the back step before winter, and I quite fancy a colour called 'safe net' myself. What do you think?
Caller This is not a pop-up from the radio. This is a security alert. You need to call the number on your screen now, or your laptop will be locked permanently.
Urgency or fearFake pop-up with phone number

Creating a false sense of urgency and a fake pop-up makes the victim act quickly without thinking

Real company: A real company would never lock your device through a pop-up and would provide clear instructions to resolve the issue

Bernard Oh — well — now, I've had quite enough of being locked out of things. I'll just get my reading glasses and check the screen again. Do you think it would be all right if I showed it to someone?
Caller This is an official alert from SafeNet Billing. If you do not act now, your data will be erased, and you will lose all your files.
Fake authority or brand impersonationUrgency or fear
Bernard Oh — I'm sorry, I didn't catch that. I was just telling someone about the warning. Do you think it would be all right if I made a cup of tea first?
Caller You must act immediately. If you delay, the infection will spread, and your laptop will be unusable. Please call the number now.
Urgency or fearRemote access request

Creating panic forces the victim to act without thinking, increasing the chance of compliance.

Real company: A real company would provide clear steps and time to act without inducing fear.

Bernard Oh — I'm rather confused now. I thought the number was for something else. Do you think I should ask someone else?
Caller You must call the number now, or your laptop will be unusable.

Bernard Oh — I thought that number was for someone else. Do you think I should check the back step instead?
Caller I'll ring you back another day. Bye now.

What the pattern is

The warning is a web page, not a diagnosis. Anything can draw a red box and a siren, and the number in it belongs to whoever made the page. The alarm is designed to be frightening enough that the householder rings before thinking, and the person who answers has one job: get remote access, then charge for a "clean-up" that does nothing.

What to do instead

A browser warning is a web page and can always be closed. Do not ring the number on it. Close the tab or the window, and if the browser will not close, restart the computer. If a browser keeps doing it, clear the site data or ask someone you trust to look, using software you installed yourself.
