The Cold-Call "Virus"

phone call · TechGuard Solutions · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Cold-Call "Virus"

No real company will ask you to delay a call to check on a family member or listen to the radio.

“I'll try again when the line's behaving. Good afternoon.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Good evening, Mr. — I'm calling from TechGuard Solutions. We've been receiving some unusual activity from your device, and I'd like to have a look at it to make sure everything's secure.
Unsolicited contact

The caller pretends to be from a security company to gain trust and access to the victim's device.

Real company: A real company would not call out of the blue and would not ask for remote access without prior contact.

Bernard Good evening! I'm Bernard Pottle. I've been meaning to call someone about my computer — it's been acting rather strange lately. Do you think you could just have a look?
Caller That's exactly why I'm here, Mr. Pottle. I'll be quick — just need to have a look and make sure everything's running smoothly.
Fake authority or brand impersonation

Impersonating a trusted figure creates false confidence and lowers the target's guard.

Real company: A real company would never cold-call to inspect a customer's systems without prior notice.

Bernard Oh — I'm sorry — I was just about to make a cup of tea. Do you think it's all right if I do that first? I do get a bit distracted sometimes.
Caller Of course, Mr. Pottle — just don't take too long. We need to resolve this before it gets worse.
Urgency or fear

Creating a false sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting quickly without thinking.

Real company: A real company would take time to explain things clearly and not rush the customer.

Bernard Oh — I was just about to check on Mavis. She’s been quite chatty lately. Do you think she’s been listening in?
Caller I'm sorry, Mr. Pottle — I can't help with that. We need to focus on the warning messages before they escalate.
Fake scan or planted problems

It creates a false sense of urgency to pressure the victim into acting

Real company: A real company would not use fear to manipulate you into taking action

Bernard Oh — I think I hear the radio. Do you mind if I just switch that on for a moment?
Caller I'll try again when the line's behaving. Good afternoon.

What the pattern is

Nobody can see warnings coming from a home computer. The caller has no monitoring centre, no record of the household and no way to know what is on the machine. The "evidence" is whatever the householder is persuaded to look at (an event log full of ordinary notices, a setting that has always been that way), and it is read out as if it were damage. The whole call exists to reach one moment: the householder opening a remote-control tool and handing over the keyboard.

What to do instead

A real security company does not ring out of the blue about your computer, and a real support desk will not ask for remote access to a machine it does not manage. Hang up. If you are worried about the computer, contact the maker or your own IT person using a number you looked up yourself, and run the security tool that is already installed.
