The Pop-Up with a Phone Number

pop-up · SafeNet Billing · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, you're through to SafeNet Billing. I see the warning on your screen — we need to act fast.
Fake pop-up with phone numberFake authority or brand impersonation

The fake pop-up creates a sense of urgency and falsely claims to be a trusted entity.

Real company: A real company would not use fake pop-ups or impersonate its brand to contact customers.

Bernard Hello, yes — I've got that pop-up, haven't I? Oh, I do hope it's not too bad. I was just looking for my reading glasses — they're on my head, aren't they? I don't suppose you'd know if it's a real warning or not?
Caller This is a security alert — if you don't respond now, your files could be damaged. Let me help you fix it.
Urgency or fear

Creating a sense of immediate danger forces the victim to act without thinking.

Real company: A real company would explain the issue calmly and provide clear steps to resolve it.

Bernard Oh, I do beg your pardon — I'm very sorry. I was just thinking about my library book, which is three weeks overdue. If you say so, I suppose it's quite urgent. But do you know — I've never been very good with computers.
Caller We're here to help — just let me take control of your screen for a moment. It's the only way to sort this out.
Fake authority or brand impersonationRemote access request

It creates a false sense of urgency and trust by pretending to offer help

Real company: A real company would never ask for remote access to your screen

Bernard Oh — that sounds rather complicated. I was just about to make a cup of tea. Do you think it would be all right if I came back in a moment? I do hope it's not too bad — I've never had anything like this before.
Caller I understand, but the longer you wait, the worse it could get. Let me help you now — please.
Urgency or fearRemote access request
Bernard Oh dear — I do wish I could. But I was just thinking, do you know, I've never had a computer with a screen like that before. I was just looking for my reading glasses again. Do you think I should wait or not?
Caller I'm not asking you to do anything dangerous — just let me see what's happening. It's the only way forward.
Remote access request
Bernard Oh — I'm quite confused now. I think I must have misdialed. I was just looking for my library book again. Do you think it would be all right if I checked the hallway? It's very quiet out there.
Caller Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The warning is a web page, not a diagnosis. Anything can draw a red box and a siren, and the number in it belongs to whoever made the page. The alarm is designed to be frightening enough that the householder rings before thinking, and the person who answers has one job: get remote access, then charge for a "clean-up" that does nothing.

What to do instead

A browser warning is a web page and can always be closed. Do not ring the number on it. Close the tab or the window, and if the browser will not close, restart the computer. If a browser keeps doing it, clear the site data or ask someone you trust to look, using software you installed yourself.
