The Pop-Up with a Phone Number

pop-up · SafeNet Billing · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, you're through to SafeNet Billing support. I see the warning on your screen — we're here to help you remove it right away.
Fake pop-up with phone numberFake authority or brand impersonation

The fake pop-up creates a false sense of urgency and makes the caller appear legitimate.

Real company: A real company would not use fake pop-ups and would direct you to official support channels.

Bernard Hello, I'm Bernard. I'm sorry, but I don't have a warning on my screen. I do hope you're warm enough. I watched a programme about lighthouses the other day — quite remarkable. I think it was on the 15th, not the 14th.
Caller I'm sorry, but the warning is urgent — if you don't act now, your device could be compromised. Let me help you clear it immediately.
Urgency or fear

Creating a false sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting without thinking.

Real company: A real company would explain the issue calmly and provide clear steps to resolve it.

Bernard Hello again. I'm not sure I have a warning. I was just thinking about that programme about lighthouses. I think it was on the 15th, not the 14th.
Caller I'm from SafeNet Billing support — we're here to assist with the warning on your screen. Let us help you now before it's too late.

Bernard Hello, I'm Bernard. I don't see a warning — I was just thinking about the other day. I believe it was on the 15th, not the 14th. I should check the garden fence — the neighbour's cat was getting in again.
Caller I'm from SafeNet Billing support — we're here to help you with the warning on your screen. Please let me assist you right away.

Impersonating a trusted brand creates false urgency and trust

Real company: A real company would not ask for remote access to your device

Bernard Hello, I'm Bernard. I don't see a warning — I was just recalling something else. I think it was on the 15th, not the 14th. I should check the garden fence again.
Caller I'm from SafeNet Billing support — we're here to help you with the warning on your screen. Let me help you now.

What the pattern is

The warning is a web page, not a diagnosis. Anything can draw a red box and a siren, and the number in it belongs to whoever made the page. The alarm is designed to be frightening enough that the householder rings before thinking, and the person who answers has one job: get remote access, then charge for a "clean-up" that does nothing.

What to do instead

A browser warning is a web page and can always be closed. Do not ring the number on it. Close the tab or the window, and if the browser will not close, restart the computer. If a browser keeps doing it, clear the site data or ask someone you trust to look, using software you installed yourself.
