The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, is this Bernard? We've been receiving some unusual alerts from your system. Would you mind if I had a look at it?
Unsolicited contact

It creates a false sense of urgency and concern to get the target to comply

Real company: Contact the user through official channels and never make unexpected calls

Bernard Hello, yes, that’s me. I was just thinking about the weather — quite mild for this time of year. Would you mind if I had a look? I’ve been meaning to check the garden myself, but it’s been so wet.
Caller I'm sorry, but I need to check your system now — we've detected unusual activity. This is TechGuard Solutions, and we need to ensure your security.
Fake authority or brand impersonation

Impersonating a security company creates false urgency and trust.

Real company: A real security company would not cold-call to check your system.

Bernard I see. I was just making a cup of tea — do you think it's still going to be warm enough? I've been meaning to look into this, but I never know where to start.
Caller We don’t have much time — the alert is escalating. If you just let me have a look, I can sort it before it’s too late.
Urgency or fear

Creating a false sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting without thinking.

Real company: A real company would take time to explain and never rush the customer.

Bernard I was just thinking about the postman — do you think he's had his lunch yet? I'd like to sort it, but I'm not sure where to begin. Would you mind if I had a look later?
Caller The alert is critical — we need to act now. If you just let me have a look, I can stop the damage before it’s too late.
Fake scan or planted problems

creates a false sense of urgency to pressure the victim into acting quickly

Real company: provide clear steps and not pressure the user into immediate action

Bernard I was just looking out the window — do you think it’s going to rain? I’d love to stop it, but I’m not sure how. Would you mind if I had a look tomorrow?
Caller The system is failing — we need to secure it now. If you just let me have a look, I can prevent the worst.
Fake scan or planted problems
Bernard I was just looking at the clock — do you think it’s still Tuesday? I’d like to prevent it, but I’m not sure what to do. Would you mind if I had a look next week?
Caller Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

Nobody can see warnings coming from a home computer. The caller has no monitoring centre, no record of the household and no way to know what is on the machine. The "evidence" is whatever the householder is persuaded to look at (an event log full of ordinary notices, a setting that has always been that way), and it is read out as if it were damage. The whole call exists to reach one moment: the householder opening a remote-control tool and handing over the keyboard.

What to do instead

A real security company does not ring out of the blue about your computer, and a real support desk will not ask for remote access to a machine it does not manage. Hang up. If you are worried about the computer, contact the maker or your own IT person using a number you looked up yourself, and run the security tool that is already installed.
