The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

No real company will keep asking the same question over and over.

“I'll send it in the post instead. Save us both the trouble. Goodbye.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, this is Vantage Support Group. I understand you're having an issue with your account, and I'm here to help.
Fake authority or brand impersonation

Using a fake company name creates false trust and makes the victim more likely to comply.

Real company: A real company would use its official name and provide clear evidence of identity.

Bernard Hello, I'm Bernard. Oh — it's the garden fence again, isn't it? The one where the neighbour's cat keeps getting in. I don't know what to do with that thing. But yes, I've had a bit of trouble with the account, if that's what you mean. It's not the one with the blue logo, is it?
Caller I'm the senior technician, Mr. Bernard. Let me take over from here — I'll sort this out quickly.
Supervisor hand-off

It creates a false sense of authority and urgency to bypass security

Real company: A real company would not ask you to hand over the call to another person

Bernard Oh, a senior technician — well, that's reassuring. I was just telling the parrot about the fence again. What exactly do you need me to do?
Caller We need to check your account for a security issue — it's urgent. If we don't act now, there could be further problems.
Urgency or fear

Creating a sense of urgency pressures victims into acting without thinking

Real company: A real company would inform you calmly and give you time to respond

Bernard Oh — security issue, is it? I was just thinking about the garden again. What sort of account is that? The one with the blue logo, or the one with the red one?
Caller We need to check your account for a security issue — it's urgent. If we don't act now, there could be further problems.
Urgency or fearRemote access request

Creating a sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting without thinking

Real company: A real company would not pressure you and would provide clear steps to resolve the issue

Bernard Oh — urgent, is it? I was just thinking about the fence again. What sort of account is that? The one with the green one, or the one with the yellow one?
Caller We need to check your account — it's urgent. If we don't act now, there could be problems.

Bernard Oh — urgent, is it? I was just looking out the window again. What sort of account is that? The one with the purple one, or the one with the orange one?
Caller I'll send it in the post instead. Save us both the trouble. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
