The Supervisor Hand-Off

No real company will ask you to wait while they fix a problem on your phone.

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, this is Vantage Support Group. I understand you're having a problem with your account. I'm here to help.
Fake authority or brand impersonation

Using a fake company name creates false trust and makes the victim more likely to comply

Real company: A real company would use its official name and provide clear evidence of identity

Bernard Hello there, I've had a bit of a tangle with the telephone — it keeps making that strange noise — but I'm quite all right now. Oh, and I nearly forgot to mention, my cousin once had a go at selling insurance, though I don't know if that's still going.
Caller I'm sorry about the noise, sir. To resolve this, I'll need to transfer you to our senior technical team — they'll be able to assist you directly.
Supervisor hand-off

It creates a false sense of urgency and legitimacy by offering help from a higher authority

Real company: A real company would not ask you to transfer to another person to resolve an issue

Bernard Oh — well — now, that sounds very official. I rather like the sound of a senior technical team. Do you think they'd be the ones who could tell me what's become of my old friend Reginald? He used to live just over the hill, but I've not heard from him in ages.
Caller I'm afraid I can't help with that, sir. We need to move forward with your account issue — if you just let me have a look, I can sort it out in minutes.
Urgency or fear

The caller creates pressure to act quickly and avoid negative consequences.

Real company: A real company would take time to explain and offer support without creating fear.

Bernard Oh, I do love the idea of letting someone have a look — though I must say, I once let a man in to look at my roof, and he never left. Do you think your team would be the sort to leave when they've finished?
Caller I understand your concern, sir. This is purely a remote check — no one will be coming to your home. It's just a quick look to fix the issue.
Remote access requestSupervisor hand-off

It reassures the victim while secretly requesting access to their system

Real company: A real company would never ask for remote access without prior arrangement

Bernard Oh — well — now, I'm rather confused. Let me just fetch my glasses — I seem to have left them somewhere. I do hope they're not still looking for Reginald.
Caller I'll wait, sir. Just a moment — we're almost there. Once I've had a look, we'll be done.
Remote access request
Bernard Oh, I do hope you're not waiting for the parrot — she's always been a bit of a slow starter. Would you like a cup of tea while we're waiting?
Caller I'll try again when the line's behaving. Good afternoon.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
