The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

No real company will ask you to wait while they fix your computer — they'll fix it right away.

“I'll ring you back another day. Bye now.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, this is Vantage Support Group. I understand you're having some trouble — I'm here to help.
Fake authority or brand impersonation

Impersonating a support group builds false trust and makes the victim more likely to comply with requests.

Real company: A real support group would ask for the caller's name and issue before offering help.

Bernard Oh — well — now, I do have a little trouble with my computer, but I've been meaning to get to it. I've got a jigsaw here, you know, with one piece missing since Easter. Do you like jigsaws?
Caller I'm sorry to hear that — let's focus on your computer. I'm a senior technician, and I need to take over from the previous caller. If you just let me have a look, I can sort it out quickly.
Supervisor hand-off

It creates a false sense of authority and urgency to bypass the victim's defenses.

Real company: A real company would not ask for remote access or hand over the call to another person without proper verification.

Bernard Oh — I'm sure you can, but I've got a bit of a cold, you know. I'm not sure I'd be able to see properly. Would you mind if I got a tissue? I think I'll need to blow my nose before we go any further.
Caller I'm concerned this might take longer than expected. We need to act quickly — if we don't resolve this now, there could be further issues. Can I just have a look?
Urgency or fear

Creating a sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting without thinking.

Real company: A real company would take time to explain and not rush the customer into action.

Bernard Oh — I do hope not. I was just about to make a cup of tea. Would you mind if I did that first? I'm not usually this slow, but I've had a bit of a day.
Caller I understand, but time is of the essence. If you just let me have a look, I can fix this in a few moments — before you even finish your tea.

Real company: A real company would take time to properly diagnose and resolve the issue

Bernard Oh — I do wish you'd give me a moment. I've been meaning to get to my garden, you know. It's such a lovely day. Would you mind if I just looked out for a minute?
Caller I really need to move quickly — this is urgent. If you just let me have a look, I can sort it out before you even notice.

Bernard Oh — I'm sorry, but I think I'll need a moment. I've been meaning to get some fresh air. Would you mind if I just stepped outside for a minute?
Caller I'll ring you back another day. Bye now.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
