The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, is this Bernard? I'm calling because our monitoring centre has been receiving some unusual signals from your system. I'd like to have a look at it now, before things get worse.
Unsolicited contact

The caller creates a sense of concern to prompt immediate action

Real company: A real company would not call without prior contact or a legitimate reason

Bernard Hello there! Yes, that's me. Oh — I thought it was Thursday — sorry, I'm a bit confused with the days. Do you know, I was just making a pot of tea when the phone rang. Would you like some? It's nearly gone cold.
Caller I'm afraid I can't stay for tea, Mr. Bernard. This is urgent — we need to have a look at your system before it's too late.
Urgency or fearFake authority or brand impersonation

Creating a sense of urgency and pretending to be an authority figure pressures the victim into acting quickly without thinking.

Real company: A real company would explain the situation calmly and provide clear steps without demanding immediate action.

Bernard Oh, well — I do hope it's not too late for tea. I was just about to have a slice of cake. It's lemon — my favourite. But if you're in a rush, I suppose we can skip that. What exactly is it that you need to look at?
Caller I can't explain right now — we need to act quickly. If you just let me have a look at it, we can fix this before it gets worse.
Urgency or fear
Bernard Oh — I see. I was just looking at the calendar, and I think it's actually Tuesday. I do hope I'm not keeping you waiting. Would you like to speak to my neighbour? She’s very good with computers.
Caller This needs to be handled now — if you let me have a look at it, we can fix the issue before it's too late.
Fake scan or planted problems

Creating a false sense of urgency to trick the victim into allowing remote access

Real company: A real company would not pressure you to act immediately without clear evidence of a problem

Bernard Oh — I was just looking at the clock. If you're in such a hurry, perhaps you could wait a moment?
Caller We can't wait — if you let me have a look at it, we can sort this out right now.
Fake scan or planted problems
Bernard Oh — I was just about to pour a cup of tea. Would you like some? It's very refreshing.
Caller Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

Nobody can see warnings coming from a home computer. The caller has no monitoring centre, no record of the household and no way to know what is on the machine. The "evidence" is whatever the householder is persuaded to look at (an event log full of ordinary notices, a setting that has always been that way), and it is read out as if it were damage. The whole call exists to reach one moment: the householder opening a remote-control tool and handing over the keyboard.

What to do instead

A real security company does not ring out of the blue about your computer, and a real support desk will not ask for remote access to a machine it does not manage. Hang up. If you are worried about the computer, contact the maker or your own IT person using a number you looked up yourself, and run the security tool that is already installed.
