The Pop-Up with a Phone Number

pop-up · SafeNet Billing · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, this is SafeNet Billing. I see the warning on your screen — we need to act quickly to secure your device.
Fake pop-up with phone numberFake authority or brand impersonation

The fake pop-up creates a false sense of urgency and makes the caller appear legitimate.

Real company: A real company would not use fake pop-ups or impersonate its name to contact you.

Bernard Oh — the warning — I saw that, yes — I didn’t know what it was — I just switched the TV on, there was a programme about lighthouses — 1987 — I think it was called *Keepers of the Light* — do you know it?
Caller I'm sorry, but we need to focus on the warning — if we don't resolve this now, your device could be at risk.
Urgency or fear

Creating a sense of immediate danger pressures the victim into acting without thinking.

Real company: A real company would explain risks calmly and provide clear steps to address them.

Bernard Oh — yes — I know — I know — but I was just thinking, do you think the lighthouse programme would be on again? I’d love to see it — I’ve never met anyone who’s been to a lighthouse — have you?
Caller I'm afraid I can't help with that — we need to deal with the warning on your screen before it's too late.
Fake authority or brand impersonation
Bernard Oh — I'm sorry — I think I may have missed something — I was just making a cup of tea — do you think the warning would be on the TV as well? I always watch the news — but I don’t know — I’ve never seen that on the news before.
Caller We need to act now — the longer we wait, the more damage could be done. Can we get started?

Creating a sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting without thinking

Real company: A real company would take time to explain and never rush you into action

Bernard Oh — I don’t know — I think I need to check the garden — the slates are loose again — and I was just thinking, do you think the warning would be in the newspaper? I always read the classifieds — but I don’t know — I’ve never seen that in the paper before.
Caller We don’t have time for this — the warning is urgent, and we need to resolve it now. Can we move forward?

Bernard Oh — I’m terribly sorry — I think I need to find my glasses — I was just thinking, do you think that would be on again? I’ve never met anyone who’s been to one — have you?
Caller I'll get someone else to ring you. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The warning is a web page, not a diagnosis. Anything can draw a red box and a siren, and the number in it belongs to whoever made the page. The alarm is designed to be frightening enough that the householder rings before thinking, and the person who answers has one job: get remote access, then charge for a "clean-up" that does nothing.

What to do instead

A browser warning is a web page and can always be closed. Do not ring the number on it. Close the tab or the window, and if the browser will not close, restart the computer. If a browser keeps doing it, clear the site data or ask someone you trust to look, using software you installed yourself.
