The Supervisor Hand-Off
phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.
In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.
The Supervisor Hand-Off
No real company will ask you to wait while they check your account.
“I'll ring you back another day. Bye now.”
The call
Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.
The caller pretends to be a high-level support representative to gain trust and control the conversation.
Real company: A real company would use your account details to verify your identity and not claim to be a supervisor.
Creating a sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting without thinking.
Real company: A real company would never use fear or urgency to push for immediate action.
Creating a false sense of urgency to pressure the victim into acting quickly without thinking
Real company: A real company would never ask for remote access to your account and would not use fear to manipulate you
What the pattern is
The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.
What to do instead
Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
