The Pop-Up with a Phone Number

pop-up · SafeNet Billing · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Pop-Up with a Phone Number

No real company will ask you to read a number from a fake screen warning.

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, you're through to SafeNet Billing. We noticed a warning on your screen — it says your device is infected. Please call the number shown to resolve it immediately.
Fake pop-up with phone numberUrgency or fear

The fake pop-up creates a sense of immediate danger to pressure the victim into acting quickly

Real company: A real company would not use fake pop-ups to direct you to call a number

Bernard Oh — I see. I didn't notice that. I was just about to ring the milkman. He's been waiting for two pounds for weeks. I'll have to pop out and sort that first. What was the number again?
Caller The number is on the screen, just below the warning. If you don't act now, the infection could spread — your files, your data, everything. Please, just read it out to me.

Bernard I can't see the screen — I've got a bit of a problem with my left eye. I think it said something about a number. Just a moment, I'll get my glasses.
Caller I understand — but time is critical. The infection could be spreading even as we speak. If you're having trouble reading the screen, I can guide you through it step by step. Just let me know when you're ready.
Fake authority or brand impersonationUrgency or fear

Creating a sense of urgency and fear makes the victim more likely to comply without thinking

Real company: A real company would take time to explain the situation clearly and calmly

Bernard That's very kind of you. I'll be ready in a moment. I just need to check if Mavis has her dinner — she's been quite upset lately. I think she's been missing her seeds.
Caller The warning is still on your screen. If you don't act now, your device may become unusable. Please read the number to me so we can help.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear

Creating a false sense of urgency to pressure the victim into acting quickly

Real company: A real company would not demand immediate action or personal information over the phone

Bernard I'm sorry, I still can't see the number. I'll need to get my magnifying glass. Do you mind if I take a minute?
Caller The situation is urgent. Please give me the number shown on your screen.

Bernard I think it was something with a lot of sixes. I'm not sure — I'll have to check again. I do hope you're not too busy.
Caller I'll send it in the post instead. Save us both the trouble. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The warning is a web page, not a diagnosis. Anything can draw a red box and a siren, and the number in it belongs to whoever made the page. The alarm is designed to be frightening enough that the householder rings before thinking, and the person who answers has one job: get remote access, then charge for a "clean-up" that does nothing.

What to do instead

A browser warning is a web page and can always be closed. Do not ring the number on it. Close the tab or the window, and if the browser will not close, restart the computer. If a browser keeps doing it, clear the site data or ask someone you trust to look, using software you installed yourself.
