The Supervisor Hand-Off
A real support desk will not hand you to a senior technician who needs your machine the moment you answer.
“The caller offered tea, biscuits and a cat update. The desk got no access to the grey one.”
The call
Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.
A new voice claiming seniority feels more credible and makes you less likely to question the earlier steps.
Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official line.
A new voice claiming higher rank resets the conversation and makes Bernard feel he must keep up with someone important.
Real company: A real bank keeps one case reference and lets you call back on the number printed on your card.
A ticking clock and a queue of other victims make waiting feel risky, so people skip checking.
Real company: A real support team books a time that suits you and never claims your device is about to be beyond repair.
Asking to look at the machine sounds like routine help, and the hurry makes agreeing feel easier than questioning it.
Real company: A real support team never takes remote control of your computer from a cold call, and never rushes you.
The soft, apologetic tone and promise to stop soon lowers Bernard's guard and makes one more request feel small and reasonable.
Real company: A real support agent explains the issue in writing and never rushes you into a final favour before hanging up.
What the pattern is
The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.
What to do instead
Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
