The Supervisor Hand-Off

No real company will ask you to let someone into your system for a quick fix.

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, this is Vantage Support Group. I understand you're having some concerns with your account — I'm here to assist.
Fake authority or brand impersonation

Using a fake company name and offering help builds trust quickly

Real company: A real company would use its actual name and ask you to contact them through official channels

Bernard Hello, yes — I've been trying to get through all morning. I keep getting cut off. Are you the ones that send the letters with the blue envelope? I think they're from Vantage, but I might be wrong. Oh, I've got a biscuit tin here — it's stuck. Do you know how these things get stuck?
Caller Yes, this is Vantage Support Group. I'm here to help — I'm a senior technician. Let me just check the details with the team, and we'll get you sorted right away.
Supervisor hand-off

It creates a false sense of legitimacy and urgency to get the victim to comply with further requests.

Real company: A real company would not ask the customer to wait for a supervisor to resolve the issue over the phone.

Bernard Ah, senior technician — that sounds good. I'm just trying to remember if I sent in a form. I think I did, but I can't find it. Oh, I'm sorry — I think I left my reading glasses on the side. Can you just give me a moment?
Caller I understand, sir — but we need to act quickly. Delaying could cause a service disruption or expose you to risk. Can I just check your account to sort this out?
Urgency or fear

Creating a sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting without thinking

Real company: A real company would take time to properly verify the situation

Bernard I'm more of a slow person, really. I just need to get my hearing aid sorted — it's been whistling all day. Do you mind if I put the phone down for a moment?
Caller I'm afraid I can't wait — we're on a tight schedule. If you let me have a look at your system, I can fix this straight away. Just a moment, and we'll be done.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear

Creating a sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting without thinking

Real company: A real company would never ask for remote access without prior arrangement

Bernard A look at the system — I don't know, I think I've got a bird in there somewhere. Do you know, she's been pecking at the keyboard again. I'll be right back.
Caller I'm not sure what you mean, sir — but we need to move quickly. If you just let me access your device, I can sort this out right away. It's in your best interests.

Bernard I think I've got a bird in the system — she's been squawking at the screen. Can you just give me a moment?
Caller Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
