The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, this is Vantage Support Group. I understand you're having an issue with your account — I'm here to help.
Fake authority or brand impersonation

Using a fake company name and claiming to help builds false trust.

Real company: A real company would use its actual name and ask you to contact them through official channels.

Bernard Hello there, yes — I do have a bit of a problem with my account, but I wasn't sure if it was the new one or the old one. I've got the coal fire going, and it's quite the fuss with the shovel. Is this the correct number for Vantage? I thought it was Vantage, but I might have confused it with Vance.
Caller Yes, this is Vantage Support Group. I'm a senior technician — I'll sort this for you. Let me just check the details and we'll get you back on track.
Supervisor hand-off

It creates a false sense of security and authority to manipulate the victim

Real company: A real company would not ask for personal details or direct you to a supervisor over the phone

Bernard Oh, a senior technician — that's reassuring. I'm just a bit confused, really. I had a call earlier about my account, and now I'm getting another one. I'll just check on the radio — it's been quite loud with the news. Do you know, I think I've heard the news repeating the same thing?
Caller We need to act quickly — there's a security alert on your account. If we don't resolve this now, there could be a disruption to your service. Let me just take a look and sort it for you.
Urgency or fear

Creating a sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting without thinking.

Real company: A real company would inform you calmly and give you time to respond.

Bernard Oh dear, a security alert — that sounds serious. I'm just a bit slow on the uptake, I'm afraid. I'll just pop to the kitchen for a moment — I think the tea's just ready. Do you know, I always forget to set the timer and it goes on for ages.
Caller I need to take a quick look to sort the alert — just a moment. If we don't act now, your account might be affected.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear

Creating a sense of urgency and offering help to fix a problem can trick people into letting go of control

Real company: A real company would explain the situation clearly and guide you to official support channels

Bernard Oh, a quick look — that's what I was thinking. I'll just see to the fire — it's been getting a bit too hot, and I've got the shovel here. Do you know, I think the budgie next door has learned the phone ring? It's quite the performer.
Caller I'm sorry, but I need to resolve this right now. If I don't have a look, there could be an issue with your account.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Oh, an issue with the account — I'm just so puzzled. I'll just check on Mavis — she's been quite chatty lately. Do you know, I think she's learned to say "hello" now? It's terribly amusing.
Caller I'll ring you back another day. Bye now.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
