The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, this is Vantage Support Group. I understand you're having trouble with your account — I'm here to assist.
Fake authority or brand impersonation

Impersonating a support group creates false trust and urgency to act

Real company: A real company would use its official name and not claim to be a support group

Bernard Hello, yes — I'm having a bit of trouble with my account, but I don't think it's anything too serious. Oh, I do hope you're not too busy — the back step needs painting before winter, and I've been meaning to get to it.
Caller I'm sorry to hear that, but I need to focus on your account issue. Let me check what's going on — I'll be quick.
Supervisor hand-off

It creates a false sense of urgency and legitimacy by claiming to escalate the issue

Real company: A real company would not claim to need to escalate the issue immediately without proper verification

Bernard I see — I'm sorry, I wasn't listening. Did you say you'd be quick? I'm not sure I'd be able to tell if you were. I hope you're not too tired, working so hard on my account.
Caller I'm here to help — if you just let me have a look, I can sort this out right away. There's no time to waste.
Urgency or fear

Creating a false sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting without thinking.

Real company: A real company would take time to explain and ensure the customer understands the situation.

Bernard I don't want to waste your time — I'd rather you didn't have to look. But if you're sure, I suppose you could have a look. I need to check on the back step again, though, just to make sure it's not too late for painting.
Caller I can't proceed without access — I need to see the issue myself. There's a window of opportunity we don't have much time for.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear

Creating a false sense of urgency pressures the victim into acting quickly without thinking

Real company: A real company would never ask for remote access or create a false sense of urgency

Bernard I don't know if I'd be able to give you access — I'm not sure I'd know how. But if you're certain, I suppose you could have a look. I'll just go and check the garden, just in case the weather's changed.
Caller I need to act now — if you don't let me in, things could get worse. There's not much time left.
Urgency or fearRemote access request
Bernard I don't want things to get worse — I'd rather they stayed just as they are. If you're sure you need to look, I suppose you could have a look. I'll just check the kettle — I think it needs filling.
Caller I'll get someone else to ring you. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
