The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support line does not need to look at your screen to close a case that was never opened.

“The senior man said the case had to be closed today, and Bernard offered to check whether it was a complaint at all.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller You've reached the senior technician at Vantage Support Group, and I'm taking over this line personally. Now then, tell me what's happening at your end so I can get this closed off properly.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new voice claiming seniority feels like escalation and care, so people relax and explain more.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official line.

Bernard Oh — well — now, you're the senior one, are you? That's grand. Only I'm not sure the first fella quite finished explaining, and my slipper's gone wandering under the armchair again. Give me a moment, would you?
Caller Right, well, forget the slipper for a moment, sir — the first operative passed your case straight up to me because it's sitting unfinished on our board. I need you to tell me what you see so I can sign this off.

A new voice claiming seniority makes the story feel official and presses the person to cooperate without pausing to check.

Real company: A real company gives a reference number and lets you call back on a number you look up yourself.

Bernard Sign it off, you say. Well, from this chair I see the garden getting a bit scruffy, and a magpie eyeing up the feeder. Is it a form you're after? Because I've got one somewhere from the water people.
Caller It's not a form, sir, and it's not the garden either. This case has been open on my board since this morning and it needs closing today, so let me have a look at what's on your screen.
Urgency or fearRemote access request

A deadline creates pressure to act fast, and asking to see the screen slips a request for access past the listener.

Real company: A real company explains the issue in writing and never needs to view your screen to close a case.

Bernard You want a look at the screen, is it? Only the set's warmed up now and I've the volume where I like it. What is it you're hoping to find on there?
Caller I can't tell you what's on it until I've had a look myself, sir — that's rather the point. It's a short job, but it does want doing today, so if you'd just let me have a look at the thing.

Bernard Hmm. Well — hang on, were you the one who rang earlier about the complaint? Because I've been thinking, and I'm not sure it was a complaint at all. Would you be warmer with a cup of something?
Caller I'm the senior one, sir, so the earlier nonsense stops with me. There's no complaint and no cup needed, I just want a look at your screen and then I'm off the line.

Bernard The senior one, I see. Well, you've caught me mid-muddle — I've had the radio on and now it's making a noise like a wasp in a jam jar. Is that the sort of thing you'd know about?
Caller Honestly, I don't know why I bother. Good afternoon.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
