The Supervisor Hand-Off

Anyone who needs to see your screen to fix a problem is selling you something, not fixing it.

“Forty minutes on the line and the only thing anyone learned was that the kettle was going on.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Right, sorry to keep you — they've passed you up to me now, senior technician at Vantage Support Group. Your line's been flagged on our system, so I'll be taking this one over.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new voice with a grander title feels like escalation and expertise, so people relax and stop questioning.

Real company: A real support team identifies you by name and case number, and you can call them back on a published number.

Bernard Oh — well, now, that's a relief. I did wonder, upstairs, was it Vantage or Vintage? Because there's a Vintage place near the roundabout does chair repairs. Anyway. You're on the phone, not at the roundabout, so I'm guessing you're the support lot.
Caller Vantage, yes — Vantage Support Group, not the chair people. Now then, your line's been flagged, so I just need to have a look at your machine and we can get this sorted.
Supervisor hand-offRemote access requestUrgency or fear

A new, more official-sounding voice makes the problem feel escalated and real, so people stop questioning and start complying.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official website.

Bernard Have a look, right. Only the back step's been waiting on me all week and I keep saying I'll paint it before the cold comes. You're not local, are you? Because if you were local you could pop round after and I'd do you a cup of tea.
Caller That's very kind but I'm nowhere near you, and honestly this can't wait — flagged lines get cut off within the hour and then you're looking at no phone at all. Just let me have a look at your machine, that's all I need.
Urgency or fearRemote access request

A tight deadline makes people act before they think, so they skip checking whether the request makes sense.

Real company: A real phone provider warns you in writing and never needs to look inside your machine to fix a line.

Bernard Cut off, you say. Hmm. Well I don't know about machines — there's the radio in the front room and it's got a thing on top of it. Is it that? Because that's been making a funny noise since Tuesday. Or was it Wednesday.
Caller No, not the radio — it'll be the computer, the one with the screen. I'll be quick, I just need your permission to have a look at it remotely, it takes no time at all.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear

Asking to connect to the computer gives the caller direct control of the device and everything on it, and the rushed tone stops the person thinking it through.

Real company: A real support team never connects to your computer from a cold call, and will let you call back on a number you look up yourself.

Bernard The one with the screen. Oh — that'd be the one Amanda set up, and I've never really taken to it. Permission, though — let me just put the kettle on while I think, because I can't think straight without a cup. Won't be a tick.
Caller Don't — please don't put the kettle on. Look, I've been on this call forty minutes and I'll be honest, I'm not even sure it's your screen that's the problem, I'm just reading what's on my sheet here.
Remote access requestFake scan or planted problems

The caller sounds unsure and tired, which makes him seem honest rather than pushy, so the listener relaxes and trusts him.

Real company: A real support agent states clearly what the problem is and how to fix it, and never asks to control your device without a verified reason.

Bernard Forty minutes! Oh dear, that's a long while. Are you eating properly? Because my Amanda rings and she says I don't eat properly, which is nonsense — I had a boiled egg and I'm still standing. What's on the sheet, then?

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
